CALGARY PROUD
I saw something while driving down 26 St. S.E. in Forest Lawn that made me proud to be a Calgarian. Along the west side of the street on every city fence post there were stuffed animals attached in honour of the children from residential schools who didn’t make it out alive. What a beautiful thing in remembrance of those children. My eyes swell with tears just thinking about it. Long may they live in our memories. Thank you Calgary from the bottom of my heart.

RIGHT APPROACH
A big thank you to Albertans that got vaccinated and to Jason, Deena and Tyler. You did a remarkable job with what you had to work with after all the feds’ bumbling. With the economy opening in Alberta, my business is starting to see light again, for the third time in 18 months. I don’t know if I could have lasted much longer under restrictions. Anxiety and depression were getting the better of me, though I’m a strong-minded person. With all the whining from others (NDP and unions) — in their eyes, you could have never been right no matter what you did — along with the likes of the fully paid, shut down crowd. The job our health workers did was nothing less than admirable. The suggestions to roll back their compensation should be stayed for now. Go after the big shots’ salaries first. Even your strongest supporters are not pleased with this approach.

FORE!
The British Open was played this weekend, and there were tens of thousands of spectators walking the golf course and sitting in the stands. Only 2,000 spectators a day will be allowed to attend the Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary next month. Perhaps someone in charge can tell us what the hell is going on and what they really are afraid of.

TIMELY COLUMN
Licia Corbella’s detailed explanation of why DST is not a good idea is spot-on. I have been opposed to the idea of permanent DST since it was first floated. The minister’s statement that Albertans “overwhelmingly endorsed” permanent DST in an earlier poll was specious, in that permanent Standard Time was not offered as an option.

(Given the initial feedback, you would think people care more about this issue than equalization!)
QUESTION TIME
On the question of whether the equalization program should be revamped, NDP Leader Rachel Notley accurately and tellingly observed, “Nobody in Ottawa is actually interested in the answer to that question.” Very true, but as the leader of the official Opposition in Alberta, you should be! However, she was much more supportive of the second question about scrapping time changes, as that will apparently be a “game changer.”
