7:09 am. Angelina Melnikova takes the gold!!!! In just over two months, the Russian women have ended the U.S. women’s team and all-around gold reign and it’s largely because of this gymnast right here.

7:03 am. Angelina Melnikova RUS FX: Full-twisting double layout, not bad in the position in the air! Small hop back. Triple L turn to double spin. Double layout, some leg form but much better than prelims, small hop back. Switch to switch ring half. Front handspring front full, hop to the side. Memmel to full spin. Let’s go queen!!!!!!!!! Double pike, hop back. THAT SHOULD DO IT! 13.833 (5.5, 8.333)

7:02 am. Rose Woo CAN BB: 11.700 (5.6, 6.100)

6:59 am. Maria Ceplinschi ROU BB: 11.633 (5.1, 6.533)

Alice D’Amato ITA UB: 12.916 (5.9, 7.016)

6:57 am. Leanne Wong USA FX: Double L turn to full pirouette. Double double, chest down but feet are PLANTED! Popa. Whip to triple full, legs are wild but great landing. Hop L full to switch ring leap. 2.5 to front full, nails it. Double pike with a hop back. 14.033 (5.7, 8.333)

6:56 am. Going back to watch Wei Xiaoyuan’s vault, which is an FTY, piked down with a hop back, her feet barely clear the table while she’s flipping out of her block.

6:55 am. Shin Solyi KOR UB: 12.900 (5.3, 7.600)

6:54 am. Emma Slevin IRL BB: 12.733 (5.2, 7.533)

6:52 am. Kayla DiCello USA FX: Double double, hop back. 1.5 to front full. Triple wolf turn. Then a double, no real problems, it’s just the arms for me. Switch full. Double pike with a small hop. Exactly what she needed, she’ll get on the podium for sure even with a fall. 13.800 (5.4, 8.400)

Yelizaveta Hubareva UKR UB: 13.100 (5.7, 7.400)

6:51 am. Ruby Stacey GBR UB: 13.433 (5.4, 8.033)

Csenge Bacskay HUN FX: 11.933 (4.4, 7.533)

6:48 am. Jennifer Williams SWE BB: Beautiful flight series, switch to switch half, slow connection and a big wobble. Takes her a few seconds to recover. Korbut. Front aerial slow to ring jump, little bobble before the back handspring, wobble. She is SO gorgeous, the toe point is visible from space. Side aerial, split jump to split ring jump, big wobbles here but a great save. Split jump to wolf jump. Small hop on the double full. 12.066 (5.0, 7.066)

Wei Xiaoyuan CHN VT: FTY, 13.200 (4.6, 8.600)

6:47 am. Georgia-Mae Fenton GBR UB: Looks like a rough routine, sadly…the D score is very worrisome and I hope she’s not hurt. 11.400 (3.8, 7.600)

6:46 am. Carolann Heduit FRA VT: DTY, 14.266 (5.4, 8.866)

6:45 am. Stefanie Siegenthaler SUI BB: 12.166 (5.0, 7.166)

6:43 am. Vladislava Urazova RUS FX: Double pike, high and soooo clean, good landing. 2.5, some direction issues into the punch front but no problems arise because of it. Switch to switch full. Smooth triple and double wolf turns. Front double full, step forward. Double full, little step out of it. This was some stunning work. 13.366 (5.0, 8.366)

Lee Yunseo KOR VT: 13.033 (4.6, 8.433)

Anastasiia Bachynska UKR VT: FTY, 13.533 (4.6, 8.933)

6:40 am. Asia D’Amato ITA VT: DTY, 14.366 (5.4, 8.966)

6:28 am. Leanne Wong USA BB: Switch to straddle jump, nice. Hit the flight series, then a full L turn. Switch ring. Side somi, almost gets a perfect connection out of it into the cross jump. Front aerial to split jump. 2.5 dismount, crossed legs and a small hop forward. Excellent routine again! 13.900

6:27 am. Naomi Visser NED FX: Going back to watch this. Triple full, short in rotation and some ankle form. Hop to the side. Double tuck was clean, but lunges back. Nice on the leaps I’ve seen. Double full to punch front.

6:26 am. Maria Ceplinschi ROU UB: 12.566 (5.1, 7.466)

6:23 am. Kayla DiCello USA BB: Candle mount. Arms a bit wild on the triple wolf turn, and the double, but she makes it through both with no problems. Little adjustment on the side aerial. Switch leap to sissone. Bhs loso loso, little check at the hips. Front aerial a little slow into the straddle jump to split jump, maybe a little short from this angle. Cross straddle jump half nowhere near 180 from this angle. Double tuck with her chest at her knees and a hop back. 13.400 (5.7, 7.700)

Emma Slevin IRL UB: 12.533 (4.9, 7.633)

Lee Yunseo KOR FX: 13.000 (5.2, 7.800)

6:20 am. We just got to see Georgia-Mae Fenton’s DTY, mostly really nice in the air! Leg form is EXCELLENT until right before the landing. Chest down.

6:19 am. Naomi Visser NED FX: 12.666 (4.7, 7.966)

6:17 am. Stefanie Siegenthaler SUI UB: 11.433 (4.5, 6.933)

Asia D’Amato ITA FX: 12.833 (5.0, 7.933, -0.1)

6:15 am. Vladislava Urazova RUS BB: Layout stepout mount, and she falls. Bhs bhs loso. Switch leap series, front aerial to split jump. Onodi with her leg up. Triple wolf turn, little bobble, then a double. Side aerial. Really nice 2.5, small hop in place. Well, she did a flight series today. 12.333 (5.1, 7.233)

6:14 am. Yelizaveta Hubareva UKR VT: 13.200 (4.6, 8.600)

6:13 am. Ruby Stacey GBR VT: 13.500 (4.6, 8.900)

6:10 am. Wei Xiaoyuan CHN FX: Triple full is short in rotation, to front tuck, lands it in a squat but hops up out of it. Stumble out of the…quad spin I think? Double tuck, clean but chest down and a step back. Triple spin. Double full, clean with a lunge back. Switch ring to switch half. 12.400 (4.7, 7.700)

Georgia-Mae Fenton GBR VT: Oh, she went for the DTY! 14.333 (5.4, 8.933)

Rose Woo CAN UB: 12.166 (4.9, 7.266)

6:08 am. Angelina Melnikova RUS BB: Switch leap mount to switch leap to split leap. Bhs loso, a little check, but not bad. Front aerial to split jump to straddle jump, excellent connections and extension on the splits. Kochetkova with a break at the hips, but she saves it from being worse. Wolf turn and side somi both go well. Split ring jump, just the back foot really, Double pike with a hop and a step back. 13.800 (5.6, 8.200)

Alice D’Amato ITA VT: 14.400 (5.4, 9.000)

Celia Serber FRA VT: 13.900 (5.0, 8.900)

6:06 am. Good on Wei Xiaoyuan for getting into the top five with a fall, but I fear floor and vault will hurt her more than the fall did.

6:04 am. Rotation 2 Standings
1. Angelina Melnikova RUS 28.999
2. Leanne Wong USA 28.407
3. Vladislava Urazova RUS 27.899

7. Maria Ceplinschi ROU 26.699
8. Filipa Martins POR 26.466

6:01 am. Leanne Wong USA UB: Oh hey finally. Lovely handstand before the toe full to Maloney to Pak to van Leeuwen, some hip and leg form on the latter. Stalder half to straddle Jaeger, stalder, some elbow form there, stuck the double layout. Wow, that’s some of her best work I think. At least this year.

Anastasiia Bachynska UKR BB: 12.800 (5.6, 7.200)

Yelizaveta Hubareva UKR FX: 12.566 (5.0, 7.566)

5:59 am. Ruby Stacey GBR FX: Memmel turn to pirouette, elegant. 2.5 to front tuck, nice! Just a small hop forward. Hop L full to tour jeté half. Double tuck, cowboys the second one but the landing isn’t too bad, just a bounce back. Clean 1.5 with a hop. 12.400 (4.7, 7.700)

5:58 am. Lee Yunseo KOR BB: 12.100 (5.3, 6.800)

5:56 am. Kayla DiCello USA UB: Stalder full to Maloney to Tkachev, leg form going into the Tkachev is weak, the Tkachev is low, and she doesn’t catch it. Back on for a piked Jaeger, Church, nice handstand before the Pak, another great one before the van Leeuwen, some arch in her back, and a full-out, good landing. 12.766 (5.6, 7.166)

5:55 am. Csenge Bacskay HUN UB: We got to watch shots of the crowd instead of this routine! Love that for us. 11.366 (4.5, 6.866)

5:52 am. Naomi Visser NED BB: 12.966 (5.2, 7.766)

5:51 am. Celia Serber FRA FX: 12.333 (4.7, 7.633)

5:50 am. Vladislava Urazova RUS UB: Inbar to Komova II to Pak to van Leeuwen, mostly clean, just some slight form on the last skill. Inbar half to piked Jaeger, really close with bent arms on the catch, short on the handstand before the toe full, a little late there, to full-in, leg form, chest down, tiny hop. 14.333 (6.1, 8.233)

5:49 am. Emma Slevin IRL VT: 13.600 (4.6, 9.000)

Asia D’Amato ITA BB: 11.900 (5.3, 6.600)

5:46 am. Filipa Martins POR UB: Hindorff, Martins (her eponymous Hindorff to mixed grip!) to Ezhova, toe full, Maloney to Pak is very clean, van Leeuwen, legs come apart and she doesn’t get enough of a release from the low bar, misses the catch. Double layout with some leg form and a hop. 13.000 (5.9, 7.100)

Wei Xiaoyuan CHN BB: 13.733 (5.8, 7.933)

Alice D’Amato ITA FX: 13.000 (5.0, 8.000)

Jennifer William SWE VT: 13.333 (4.6, 8.733)

5:45 am. Marlies Männersdorfer AUT VT: 12.666 (4.0, 8.666)

5:43 am. Angelina Melnikova RUS UB: Inbar full, nice, to Komova II to Pak, van Leeuwen MUCH cleaner than the other day, inbar half with leg separation to a piked Jaeger, maybe a little close, short on the handstand before her toe full but does that nearly fully vertical, to a full-in with some leg form and a hop. 14.533 (6.1, 8.433)

5:42 am. Rose Woo CAN VT: 14.066 (5.5, 8.566)

Looks like Leanne Wong hit bars and went 14.066, but we didn’t see it…I’ll go back and post once we do, I assume they’ll show it later.

5:41 am. Carolann Heduit FRA BB: 12.633 (5.1, 7.533)

5:40 am. Maria Ceplinschi ROU VT: FTY, 13.633 (4.6, 9.033)

5:39 am. Shin Solyi KOR FX: Piked full-in, small hop forward. Front layout to front double full, some leg form and a hop. Switch ring to switch full. Memmel turn with a little stumble. Clean 1.5 to front full. Double pike a little slow, underrotated with a couple of steps back when she pulls her chest up. 12.600 (5.1, 7.500)

5:37 am. Leanne Wong will be the first up on vault. Nothing too wild to report from the touch so far.

5:35 am. Rotation 1 Standings

1. Kayla DiCello USA 14.600
2. Angelina Melnikova RUS 14.466
3. Leanne Wong USA 14.341
4. Naomi Visser NED 13.800

8. Filipa Martins POR 13.466

5:33 am. Ruby Stacey GBR BB: 12.000 (4.8, 7.200)

Jennifer Williams SWE FX: 12.100 (4.5, 7.900, -0.3)

By the way, if we don’t see a routine on the feed, I’m just putting the scores so we have SOMETHING.

5:30 am. Lee Yunseo KOR UB: Inbar full to Komova II to Pak, very clean. Van Leeuwen, some ankle form, inbar half, a little crooked into the piked Jaeger but thankfully didn’t pike it down like she did in qualifications. Stalder full a little bit late, into a full-in with a hop forward. 13.566 (6.1, 7.466)

5:29 am. Georgia-Mae Fenton GBR BB: 12.566 (5.2, 7.366)

Naomi Visser NED UB: A hit it seems! 13.800 (6.0, 7.800)

5:28 am. Stefanie Siegenthaler SUI FX: 1.5 to front full, tucks her legs and then has a big stumble out of it, crashes OOB. Split jump full. Double tuck a little slow in rotation, but a good landing. Leap series with a weak switch ring at the end. She has a few nice performances areas so far. Double full, legs bent and apart with a hop. 11.133 (4.6, 6.833, -0.3)

5:26 am. Asia D’Amato ITA UB: 12.600 (5.7, 6.900)

Bars seems like a REAL disaster today so that’s fun.

Marlies Männersdorfer AUT FX: 12.200 (4.5, 7.700)

5:24 am. Rose Woo CAN FX: 12.933 (5.0, 7.933)

5:22 am. Csenge Bacskay HUN VT: Yurchenko 1.5, a little short with a step back. 13.666 (5.0, 8.766, -0.1)

Vladislava Urazova RUS VT: FTY, pikes it down, tiny hop in place, but again glad she went this way and not with the bigger option. 13.566 (4.6, 8.966)

Celia Serber FRA BB: Came off early in the routine and then again after her bhs back pike. Front aerial to split jump was nice. Just a layout dismount. 10.300 (4.9, 5.400)

5:20 am. Wei Xiaoyuan CHN UB: Inbar full to Komova II to Pak, van Leeuwen, very nice. Toe half to her front pirouettes, some ankle separation, misses the handstand out of the second one and has to hop off. Back on for a piked Jaeger, and a clean full-twisting double layout dismount, step to the side. 13.366 (6.4, 6.966)

Filipa Martins POR VT: I assume a relatively solid FTY. 13.466 (4.6, 8.866)

Alice D’Amato ITA BB: 11.766 (5.2, 6.566)

Carolann Heduit FRA UB: 12.533 (5.9, 6.633)

5:17 am. Angelina Melnikova RUS VT: DTY, huuuuge! But the form is a bit more severe than either Kayla’s and Leanne’s, and she has a big bounce back.  14.466 (5.4, 9.066)

Anastasiia Bachynska UKR UB: 12.800 (5.5, 7.300)

5:15 am. Maria Ceplinschi ROU FX: Double layout, some leg separation with a hop back. Full-in with a bigger hop back. Switch ring to switch half. Double tuck to punch front, that was great. Switch full. Double pike to finish, pretty open in the first flip, a tiny bit deep on the landing. 13.066 (5.2, 7.866)

Yelizaveta Hubareva UKR BB: 12.733 (5.1, 7.633)

Emma Slevin IRL FX: 11.266 (4.7, 6.866, -0.3)

5:14 am. Leanne Wong USA VT: DTY, actually looked a bit cleaner in the air for the most part compared to DiCello’s, with just some crossed ankles, no real hip or knee bend, but doesn’t have nearly the amplitude and some comes off the table a bit crooked, landing completely OOB. Or maybe hopped out? Hard to see. 14.341 (5.4, 9.041, -0.1)

5:12 am. Kayla DiCello USA VT: Big and mostly clean DTY, just some leg form from the hips on down, but not super severe at all. She could do it better, but just the tiniest hop back is good. 14.600 (5.4, 9.200)

5:09 am. Leanne Wong pulled out her DTY without problems in the touch, as did Melnikova. Whoever went after that just threw a full…oh, Filipa Martins it looks like. Oh, and just a full for Urazova! Thank GOD.

5:08 am. Now warmups are starting. Pray for Vladislava Urazova on vault. WHY DOES SHE TWIST SO LATE. I was watching her qualifications vault over again and she literally does the first half flip before she starts to twist?!?! Like, congratulations for not twisting off the table but GIRL speed it up. That delay plus the low block she got the other day is a disaster waiting to happen…a worse disaster than just falling on her side.

5:04 am. Athletes are marching in now. Loving Csenge Bacskay casually showing up in the top group like a queen, but hating that she’s there because of Hatakeda Hitomi’s horrible injury. Hatakeda was everything for the Japanese team last quad, doing so much of the work without very much of the individual glory, so I was really happy this would be her time to shine in that sense, and I’m devastated that things worked out the way they did.

5:00 am. I have both the FIG YouTube stream up (using a Czech Republic VPN) as well as the Olympic Channel app on my phone, both playing the same exact feed but you never know which one will fail me so here we are. Live results are also available via Longines.

My preview is that Angelina Melnikova is basically the Simone Biles of this meet and could win even without a perfect day. Even though Leanne Wong was excellent in qualifications, I am worried about her ability to repeat that today, while I see Kayla DiCello as the calmer competitor and think she’ll get a medal. Wong will medal if she hits, but I do have to worry. I’d love to see a surprise medal from someone outside of the U.S. or Russia, though. Because the gymnasts below them in that 52-53 range could go any of ten ways on any given day. It would take a lot more than just a casual slip-up from one of the stronger gymnasts, and Vladislava Urazova has a LOT she can make up from qualifications, but I love chaos so I’m here for literally anyone else having the meet of a lifetime and getting on that podium.
