WALLACE, N.C. – North Carolina A&T completed their first stroke-play tournament of the season in women’s golf at the par-72, 5,869-yard River Landing Golf Course in the River Landing Classic hosted by UNC Wilmington.
The Aggies finished 12th at 64-over 928. They shot a 20-over 308 in the second round and a 20-over 308 in the third round.
East Carolina won the tournament by shooting a 15-under 849. Coastal Carolina finished second at 11-under 853, followed by East Tennessee State (ETSU) at 10-under 854, James Madison at 6-under 858 and Rutgers at 1-over 865 in the top-five.
Individually, junior Christyn Carr led the Aggies with an 11-over 227 as she finished tied for 44th. High Point University’s Sarah Kahn won the individual tournament by shooting a 13-under 203 to finish two strokes ahead of Coastal Carolina’s Nicole Abelar, who shot an 11-under 205. East Carolina’s Julie BoysenHillestad (9-under, 207), James Madison’s Kendall Turner (8-under, 208) and ETSU’s TerezaMelecka (8-under, 208) rounded out the top-five individually.
After shooting a 2-over 74 on Day 1, senior Madison Harriman finished the tournament at 17-over 233 to tie teammate and sophomore Jayla Rogers in 54th place. Senior Xus Boira shot 20-over 236.
Carr carded a 4-over 76 in the second round. Her card included 13 pars, two bogeys and one double bogey. In the third round, she recorded two birdies and one triple bogey. Carr birdied the par-3, 140-yard No. 5 and the par-5, 501-yard No. 17. She was 1-under on the back nine of the third round. Carr had the second-most pars in the tournament with 41.
Harriman had some trouble on the front nine of the second round with two bogeys and a double bogey. She had three bogeys on the back nine before starting her third round. She posted a birdie on the front nine of the third round on the par-4, 327-yard No. 9. She also birdied No. 17 and recorded a par on the par-4, 334-yard 18th to close out her day.
Rogers had an excellent second round. She posted four birdies and was 1-over on the front nine. She birdied the No. 2, 300-yard par-4 to move to even for the round. She moved back to even after birdieing the 378-yard, par-4, No. 4. She went to 1-over for the second round after a birdie on No. 13, a 482-yard par-5.
She posted two bogeys before birdieing the 501-yard, par-5, No. 17 to move to 2-over for the second round. In the third round, Rogers picked up two more birdies on the front nine as she birdied No. 2 and the par-5, 482-yard No. 6.
Boira had one birdie in her second round as she carded a four on No. 17. She also had a birdie on the par-3, 153-yard No. 8. Boira shot even par on par-3’s.
The Aggies return to action in three weeks when they participate in the Black Colleges Golf Coaches Association Invitational in Raleigh, N.C., March 29-30.
