UNC Men’s Golf Wins Tar Heel Intercollegiate by 18 Strokes

Led by freshman Peter Fountain, the UNC men’s golf team took home the championship at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Monday in Chapel Hill by a whopping 18 strokes.

Fountain shot 15-under-par for the tournament to win his first career individual title, while UNC shot 13-under-par in Monday’s final round to finish with a team score of 28-under-par.

That team score was the second-best ever recorded in the eight year history of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, which is played at Finley Golf Course.

This marks UNC’s second tournament win of the season and third straight victory at its home event.

For Fountain, he now has a win and two second-place finishes through his first five collegiate tournaments.

I was definitely ready to win,” says Fountain. “I felt pressure from the last couple of second-place finishes so I knew what I had to do to get it done this time. It was nice not knowing the scores, because I was able to just play my game and not stress over anything but focus on playing well for the team.”

Second place Campbell (-10) and third place Michigan State (-7) were the only teams besides UNC to finish under par.
