SADDLEBROOKE, Ariz. – Freshman Zoe Slaughter fired a career-low 67 to lead the Cougars and stand in a tie for second following the First Round at the MountainView Collegiate on Friday.

 

Starting her day off No. 1 on the 6,250-yard, par-72 course at The Preserve Golf Club, the Houston native opened with two straight pars and then drained three straight pars on Nos. 3-5. After enduring her lone bogey of the day on No. 7 she closed her front nine with consecutive pars.

 

Slaughter started her back nine with a birdie on No. 10 and then drained three birdies in a four-hole stretch on No. 13-16, including back-to-back birdies on Nos. 15-16.

 

The Memorial High School product tied for the second-lowest round by a freshman in program history. Hannah Screen shot a 66 at the Battle at the Beach during the 2018-19 season. Current teammate and junior Maria Jose Martinez posted a 67 during the Final Round of the Jim West Challenge in 2018-19.

 

She joined Texas’ Agathe Laisne and Oklahoma State’s Rina Tatematsu in the group at 67.

 

As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 278 to stand in second after the first day, six strokes behind No. 31 Texas. No. 36 Iowa State (278), No. 8 Oklahoma State (279), No. 30 North Texas (285), UNLV (285), No. 9 Baylor (286), No. 50 Kansas State (290, San Jose State (295) and No. 45 Tulsa (299) rounded out the Top-10 leaders.

 

Reigning American Athletic Conference Player of the Week Anne Normann enjoyed a 68 in the opening round and was tied for fifth. After posting two birdies with a bogey on her front nine, the Rungsted, Denmark, native drained four straight birdies midway through the back nine.

 

Sophomore Karen Fredgaard continued her stellar play this season with a 3-under 69. After enduring a bogey to start her day, she quickly moved to red numbers with an eagle on No. 3 and overcame a bogey on No. 7 with another eagle on No. 8 and a birdie on No. 9 to cap her front nine.

 

The Asserbo, Denmark, native added her final birdie of the day on the par-5 16th hole to tie for eighth at 69.

 

Senior Ariana Saenz was tied for 39th at 74. Junior Maria Jose Martinez was tied for 49th at 76.

 

Texas’ Ashleigh Park held the first-day lead with a 66. Iowa State’s Amelia Mehmet Grohn and North Texas’ Audrey Tan joined Normann in a tie for fifth.

 

The tournament continues with the Second Round beginning at 11 a.m. (CDT) and continues with the Final Round at 10:30 a.m. (CDT) Sunday.

For Saturday’s Second Round, the Cougars will play together in a group, teeing off No. 1 at 11:15 a.m. (CDT).

 
UP NEXT

Following the MountainView Collegiate, Houston returns to action when it tees off in the Bruzzy Challenge at Lantana Golf Club in Dallas on March 28-29.

 

From there, Fredgaard will compete as an individual at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur on April 1-4 in Augusta, Ga. She earned the invitation as one of the nation’s premier amateur players.
