ROUNDUP: Ripon girls golf team tops EU in VOL debut

Ripon High’s girls golf team showed well in its Valley Oak League debut Wednesday at Manteca Park Golf Course.

Led by a pair of 42s, the Indians overcame gusty conditions, low-medalist Brittney Barrington and East Union for a 235-245 victory. Ripon is the reigning champion of the Valley Foothill League’s North Division, but in order to compete under state guidelines amid the coronavirus pandemic the school is competing in the VOL for this academic year.

I am happy that the VOL let us play in their league,” Ripon coach Eric Dambrosio said. “The league director and coaches are really nice and very supportive. I think it is great that the girls are finally playing. In practice they are having fun and laughing. This season is very different this year but, it’s giving the girls a feeling of normalcy during a time that is so uncertain.”

Zoe Bremer and Gabbi Ilardi carded the 42s for Ripon. Ilardi was named the VFL North’s Most Outstanding Player as a freshman last year, and she went on to claim the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V individual title. Freshman Katie Martin added a 47. Tyla Branham and Ana DiGiulio each shot 52.

Barrington topped the field with a 2-over 38. Also scoring for East Union were Michelle Hernandez (47), Ashley Trinidad (50), Heighlee Mosher (53) and Morgan Geske (57).
