Pendaries Paces Men’s Golf at Wake Forest Invitational

PINEHURST, N.C. – The Duke men’s golf team had three players finish in the top 20, including another top-five showing for senior Adrien Pendaries, as the Wake Forest Invitational wrapped up Tuesday at Pinehurst No. 2.

Pendaries fired a 1-over 71 on Tuesday and finished the 54-hole tournament at even-par 210, which was good for a tie for fifth place – his second top-five in four events this spring. The senior has been among the top 20 finishers three times in four starts this spring.

As a team, the Blue Devils finished fourth overall, with host Wake Forest going wire-to-wire to win the tournament as the lone team in red figures at 6-under par. North Carolina (+3), NC State (+17), Duke (+21) and Virginia (+37) rounded out the top five. The Blue Devils have been in the top five in three of four events this season.

Also in the top 20 for Duke were freshmen teammates Jimmy Zheng (t-15th) and Ian Siebers (t-20th). Zheng shot a 73 on Tuesday and posted a 7-over 217 for the tournament, while Siebers signed for a 75 in the final round and was two back of Zheng at 9-over 219.

Playing individually, junior Quinn Riley capped a solid tournament and was 8-over 218, which was tied for 18th.

Junior Drew Powell capped his tournament with a 76 on Tuesday and placed tied for 27th at 11-over 221. Graduate Steven DiLisio was a shot back of Powell at 12-over 222, good for a tie for 32nd.

Pendaries led the tournament in par-5 scoring, averaging 4.17 strokes (-5). The senior’s 11 birdies for the tournament –including four in Tuesday’s final round — were second most, while Zheng had nine.

The Blue Devils are off until the Valspar Collegiate Invitational, which is set for March 15-16 at The Floridian in Palm City, Fla.
