Organizers Slate Sunday Disc Golf Event in Olean’s Gargoyle Park

OLEAN, NY — Sunday is supposed to be a rainy day.

And that’s the day for the final preview the Twin Tiers Disc Golf Club Nonprofit is offering before the permanent baskets are installed at Gargoyle Park.

Five weeks ago in February, the first time the club invited the public to a preview event, temperatures were below freezing — and people came.

“I would say for 20 people to show up in 15-degree weather and play a round of disc golf in a foot of snow, I call that a success,” Rich Longer, a golf club leader, said.

The morning sessions are geared toward casual or beginner players, and tee off times are set for every 8 minutes between 10 a.m. and noon. Cost for those sessions is $10; disc rentals are available.

At 2 p.m., the disc golf club offers an optional Random Doubles for more experienced players. The fee also is $10.

Registration for Sunday’s sessions ends at 8 p.m. Saturday and are separate for morning and afternoon.

Longer, a Derrick City, Pennsylvania, resident recalled the February event and mentioned St. Bonaventure University’s Coordinator of Intramurals, Recreation, and Club Sports Margot Hickey.

“They were mainly experienced players, but I would say that Margot was new,” he said. “There were a couple other kids from St. Bonaventure, and some of the sponsors that came out that were new. So, about a third of the players were new. That’s a good sign when usually it’s only die-hard people playing in these types of conditions.”

Longer referred to the university as a “gold sponsor” of the course.

“I think St. Bonaventure students are going to get a lot of use out of it,” he said. “Margot Hickey has already been interested in using the course for intramurals, so that’s probably going to happen.”

Club organizers foresee a ribbon-cutting ceremony when the course is complete; miniature disc golf for children 4 and older and a fall glow-in-the dark disc golf event.

“The City of Olean has expressed that they want to fill the park with young students and people and I think intramurals are a great way to foster competition,” Longer added.
