Ole Miss men’s golf heads down to Red Stick for the spring opener

I think it’s safe to say that it’s been a weird one. Thanks to this pandemic I keep hearing so much about, the Fall 2020 schedule got turned completely around and shortened. The result was a handful of SEC-only events at various home courses. OUR GOLF SONS got off to a bit of a slow start with rough to moderate showings in the first two events, a 14th place finish in Fayetteville at the Blessings, and an 8th place team score in Nashville at the Vanderbilt Legends Club (I assume the legends are Jay Cutler and maybe Will Perdue), but picked up the business at the end of the season in Alabama.

The Rebs finished in a 5th-place spot as a team and Sophomore sensation Jackson Suber came away with individual medalist honors after a three-day total of -12 under at the Old Overton Club.

The schedule is a little more set for the Spring, with another round of SEC-onlyish events, starting at the University Club in Baton Rouge and ending at the SEC Championships in its traditional venue at Sea Island.

This week’s tournament: The LSU Invitational

When: February 26-28

Where: Baton Rouge, La.

The Course: The University Club

Literally the house that David Toms built. The University Course is but a mere few minutes drive down Nicholson from the disease-infested trappings of Tigerland. I’m highly disappointed that they aren’t playing this at the City Park Golf Course. The potential for a mugging or drive by shooting would have really leveled the playing field.

The 46th-ranked Rebels:

Ranked 46th but really, who can say how good anyone is at this point so lets just assume that the 45 teams in front of us are all suspect.

Jackson Suber (Jr., Tampa, Fla.): Has taken the reigns as the lead dog on the team. Won his first tournament as a college golfer at the Jerry Pate. His -12 under total is tied with OUR LORD THORNBERRY for the lowest three-round total by a Rebel ever.

Sarut Vongchaisit (Jr., Bangkok, Thailand): Solid foundational player for the team. Carded a -4 (66) in his final round of the Fall 2020 at the Jerry Pate. 72 stroke average.

Cecil Wegener (Sr., Jackson, Miss.): The Precious one is fighting his way back from double hip surgery last summer. Played in only one event in the Fall.

Veeti Mahonen (Soph, Kirkkonummi, Finland): Bit of an up and down fall for the big Fin. Finished 8th at the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate. 12th start as a Rebel.

Brett Schell (Redshirt Fr., St. Augustine, Fla.): Lot of talent in the freshmen from Florida. Played in all three fall events. Best finish was a tie for 34th at the Blessings.

The Field: Alabama, Arkansas State, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana Tech, LSU, Mississippi State, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vanderbilt

The top individuals who will be playing for second: No. 2 Michael Feagles — Illinois, No. 13 John Augenstein — Vanderbilt, No. 14 William Moll — Vanderbilt, No. 23 Ryan Hall — South Carolina, No. 34 Alex Goff — Kentucky, No. 35 Trent Phillips — Georgia, No. 37 Julian Sale — Arkansas State, Phillip Barbara — LSU, No. 8 Davis Thompson — Georgia, Wilson Furr — Alabama, Hunter Wolcott — Tennessee
