Navy Golf Places Second at Match Play By the Bay

Chad Deegan (Jr / Newport Beach, Calif.) and Will Meshad (So / Atlanta, Ga.) paired up to post a 2-0 record on Saturday and lead the Navy Blue men’s golf team to a second-place finish at Match Play By the Bay.  Hosted by the Mids at the Naval Academy Golf Club, Navy fielded two teams (blue and gold) to compete in a match-play scored tournament against George Washington and first-year program Howard. The Bison went 2-0 on the day to claim the tournament title, followed by Navy Blue, (1-1) George Washington (1-1) and Navy Gold (0-2).

Navy Blue opened the day with a 2.5-0.5 victory over George Washington. Deegan and Meshad claimed a 3&2 victory over Adrian Castagnola and his teammate Cliff Thompson to put the Mids up 1-0. Team captain Charlie Musto (Sr / Sterling, Va.) and David Miccoli (Jr / Ludlow, Mass.) collaborated to earn a 2&1 win over GW’s Hugo Riboud and Ty Sullivan to clinch the team victory. The third match featuring Navy’s twosome of Ward Wilkinson (Sr / Ashland, Va.) and Nicholas Klock (Jr / Moraga, Calif.) was suspended after 16 holes with the score all square due to the Mids clinching the overall victory.

Meeting in the championship match were Howard and Navy Blue, but the Mids were unable to use their momentum from the morning session to propel them past the Bison. Deegan and Meshad dominated Howard’s Richie Jones and Otis Ferguson 8&7, but Musto and Miccoli were tripped up by Joshua Siplin and Edrine Okong 3&2 and Wilkinson and Klock fell short in a 4&3 decision by Everett Whitten and Greg Odom.

Navy Gold dropped both of is matches on Saturday, but saw solid performances throughout the day. Jake Miles (Sr / Fredericksburg, Va.) and Reece Massei (Fr / Warrenton, Va.) paired up to earn a 6&5 win over Jones and Ferguson of Howard in a 2-1 loss to the Bison in the opening round. Meanwhile, Michael Brennan (Sr / Locust Valley, N.Y.) and Keegan Shreves (So / Potomac, Md.) bounced back to post a 4&3 victory against George Washington’s Whitten and Odom in the consolation finals.

The Midshipmen will be back in action on Saturday when they play host to Richmond in dual action. Saturday’s format will feature nine singles matches beginning at 11:00 am.
