EATONTON, Ga.—The Chattanooga Mocs registered three par or better cards turning in a 4-under 284 Saturday at the Linger Longer Invitational. The Mocs took the moniker “moving day” seriously climbing into the top five on the leaderboard.

The group passed five teams to reach Florida Gulf Coast in a tie for fifth at 581 while passing North Alabama then Kennesaw State before dropping High Point, Memphis and Middle Tennessee behind. Their collective effort tied Georgia Tech for the fourth-lowest team score on a stingy scoring day at the Great Waters Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee.

The key to the performance was a strong finish. The Mocs made the turn at 18 with a 3-over score. They played the front nine second today and went seven under on that side. That was led by Matt Smith but capped by A.J. Lintunen’s whose birdie on nine was just the sixth on the hole all day.

Smith made his turn at even then birdied two, four and five to get to 3 under where he finished with 69. Connor Nolan also polished off his day 3 under on this nine to shoot 70. Paul Conroy ended with a level-par 72, while Lintunen’s final hole heroics completed a 73.

Lintunen remains in the top 20 tied for 16th at 144 (E). Nolan is one shy of his teammate tied for 25th at 1 over, while Smith and Conroy are another stroke back tied in 30th. Oliver Simonsen rounds out the scoring with 158.

Charlotte surged past Georgia Tech into the lead with 277 today. The 49ers 562 is five ahead of the Yellow Jackets with LA Tech (573) in third and Virginia (578) fourth just ahead of the Mocs and FGCU.

The field returns to Great Waters Sunday morning for the final 18. Chattanooga is matched with the Cavaliers and Eagles starting on the first hole at 9:15 a.m., Eastern Daylight Time. Simonsen goes first with Smith, Conroy, Nolan and Lintunen next. Click the scoring link above for complete results and pairings when available.
