The Kansas State men’s golf team finished off its first play of the 2022 spring season in the Mobile Intercollegiate tournament in Mobile, Alabama, with a fourth-place finish.
The Wildcats finished 5-under par 859 for the two-day tournament, just one stroke behind No. 20 Illinois. Finishing in fourth place, the results give the Wildcats their 13th top-five finish in the past four seasons and third of the 2021-2022 season.
Through two rounds, K-State scored 1-under par 305 — outside of the top-five — but scored 4-under par 284 in the third round, pushing the Wildcats inside the top-five for the tournament. K-State’s third-round performance tied for the second-best of the round.
“Overall, it was a good finish for us,” head coach Grant Robbins said. “I thought we were very solid off the tee and into the greens. We just weren’t sharp enough with the short game.”
Junior Tim Tillmanns led K-State at the tournament at 4-under par 212, tied for seventh place. Tillmans’ top-10 finish was his third this season and the sixth of his career. Finishing the third round 3-under par 69, Tillmans leaped into the top-10 at the end of the tournament.

Behind Tillmans for K-State were freshmen Nicklaus Mason and Laurenz Schiergen. Mason finished tied for 13th-place with a score 2-under par 214, highlighted by his 2-under par 70 second round. Schiergen competed in his collegiate debut tied at 23rd place, with an even-par 216.
“We have a pretty young team, and we need to keep working on being comfortable under par and learning how to finish off those rounds,” Robbins said. “That will come with experience, and I know we will continue to get better.”
The last two members of the team were senior Will Hopkins and sophomore Luke O’Neill. Hopkins finished the tournament tied for 37th-place at 3-over par 219. O’Neill tied for 45th-place at 5-over 221. Lastly, redshirt freshman Cooper Schultz competed individually and tied for 28th-place at 1-over par 217.
“This is a very talented group,” Robbins said. “We just have to keep getting better.”
The Wildcats have a three-week break until March 7-8 at the Colleton River Intercollegiate in Bluffton, South Carolina.
