The Uvalde Lobos are the District 30-4A golf champions.
They put together a two-day tournament total of 772 strokes to take top team honors in action at Uvalde Memorial Golf Course.
“It was a good two days of solid golf for our Lobos golf team,” said Uvalde High School head golf coach Roy Torres.
“I was excited for girls. Last year, we had no district tournament because of the pandemic, so I think our girls were really focused and ready to compete for the title this year,” said Torres. “I am extremely proud of the hard work these girls have put in to get to where they are as district champs.”
The Lobos posted a team total of 389 on Monday and a team total of 383 on Tuesday to finish 42 strokes ahead of Carrizo Springs in the team standings.
Carrizo finished 12 strokes ahead of Hondo, 826, and far ahead of Pearsall, 1,045.
Macey Fowler finished third in the individual competition. She carded a two-day total of 177.
Fowler had individual rounds of 91 and 86.
Sofia White wound up fourth overall with her two-day total of 179, including individual rounds of 86 and 93.
Others competing for UHS were Morgan Dreyer and Vada Willis, who each had totals of 208, and Decymbr Martinez had a 226 total.
Dryer’s rounds were 107 and 101, Willis’ rounds were 105 and 103, while Martinez’s rounds were 108 and 118.
The Lobos will advance to the regional tourney set for April 19-20 at Victoria’s Colony Creek Golf Course.
Two other UHS girls competed as medalist entrants. They included Payton Dodson, who had a 119 in the first round, but withdrew, and Ava Vaughan, who had rounds of 131 and 132 for a 236 total.
Hondo’s Mallory Matthews won medalist honors. She had rounds of 74 and 67 for a 141 total.
Carly Allen of Carrizo Springs claimed second place. Her rounds of 85 and 90 gave her a 175 total.
Coyotes place second
In the District 30-4A boys’ tournament, the Uvalde Coyotes took runner-up honors in the team standings.
The Coyotes had rounds of 418 and 405 for a 823 total. Carrizo Springs finished first with an 808 total.
Hondo placed third with an 830 total, followed by Uvalde No. 2, 845, and Pearsall, 1,007.
Jack Brock had Uvalde’s top individual score. He carded rounds of 93 and 97 for a 190 total to place his fourth overall.
Zach Martinez and Ryder Torres each totaled 212 strokes.They tied for ninth place.
Martinez combined rounds of 110 and 102, while Torres’ rounds were 113 and 99.
Aiden Alcazar posted a 217 total with rounds of 110 and 107, while Anthony Lugo posted rounds of 105 and 116 for a 221 total.
“We were five shots behind Hondo in the battle for second place with our last two players to come in, but Ryder and Aiden finished ahead of the Hondo players to advance us to regional,” said Coach Torres. “Only five shots separated the top three teams on the second day of the tournament.”
Michael Gibbs had the low score for the Uvalde No. 2 team. Gibbs’ rounds of 111 and 91 gave him a 202 total.
Brodie Carnes had rounds of 108 and 96 to finish with a 204 total.
Justin Rodriguez chalked up rounds of 103 and 110 to finish at 213.
Dylan Sickenius totaled 226 with his rounds of 112 and 114.
Hondo’s Kaden English won medalist honors with his 167 total.
David McDaniel of Carrizo Springs took second with his 169, while Rogelio Benavides of Crystal City placed third with a 171 total.
