ROSCOE (WREX) — It might be December but it doesn’t necessarily feel like it outside. That’s why a golf course in Roscoe has a special surprise for its patrons.

It doesn’t matter how cold it is for Rockford residents Joel Blomberg and Richard Tewell. They’ll travel to whatever golf course is open in the region.

“If it ain’t snowing, we’re still going,” said Tewell when explaining the motto he has with a group of friends. “We like to play year-round and there’s times where you might only get one round a month in and we’ll travel as far as Bloomington to get it in. But we like to play all the time.”

That’s exactly why when the Forest Preserves of Winnebago County decided to open Ledges Golf Course for two days this week, thanks to warmer temperatures, they knew it would be a hit.

“We got some phone calls right away on Monday about it. People asking, ‘okay, I’m ready. Who do I call? What do I have to,”https://www.wrex.com/” explained FPWC Communications Coordinator Samantha Crooks.

Staff got all the equipment back out for die-hard golf fans allowing up to 100 players to tee off at the same time Tuesday and Wednesday.

The creeks at Ledges are frozen over but that’s not stopping golf enthusiasts from hitting the links. Some players said the ice played to their advantage.

“With any sport, if it’s something you really enjoy doing, you are going to go against anything to go and play it,” said Crooks.

“What I like more than anything else is the comradery and being outdoors,” said Blomberg. “It doesn’t make any difference what time of the year it is. You get to say hi to your old friends. It’s a beautiful thing.”

Swinging in time for friends, family and the love of the game.

“Fall golf or winter golf, if you can get it this cleaned up and playable, this is great,” said Tewell.

According to the Forest Preserves, within the first hour of registration on Monday, 100 spots for Wednesday’s shotgun start sold out. Thursday is cancelled due to forecasted winds.
