GREENVILLE, S.C. – Sophomore Jon Hopkins (Bishop’s Stortford, England/Mississippi Gulf Coast CC) shot a third-round 69 to finish second individually and lead the FGCU men’s golf team to a second-place showing at the Furman Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon at the Furman University Golf Course (Par 71, 7984 yards). Hopkins finished with a 54-hole total of 210, just three strokes off the winning score, while the Eagles were just two strokes behind tournament champion Furman (853).
Along with Hopkins, junior Brady Madsen (Raymond, Minn./MacCray HS/Winona State) finished tied for fifth after carding a three-day total of 212 following Sunday’s score of 71 for the second straight round.
FGCU shot 855 to place second overall and carded a 283 on Sunday. That put marked the second-lowest third round team score of the day to move the Green and Blue from third to second. Chattanooga finished third after shooting 282 on Sunday, while Wofford placed fourth (860).
“I’m really proud of our student-athletes and coaches,” said head coach Andrew Danna. “They did a tremendous job this week. We are looking forward to our next opportunity to compete.”
The Eagles had a trio tie for 29th as sophomore Frankie Capan III (North Oaks, Minn./Northwest Christian HS/Alabama), senior Van Holmgren (Plymouth, Minn./Waysata HS/North Dakota State) and freshman Thomas Salanito (Palm Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic), who was competing as an individual, all shot 220 for the tournament. Junior Henry Tschopp (Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland/Western Texas College/Dodge City CC), playing in his first tournament for the Eagles, finished tied for 52nd with a score of 223.
Hopkins carded a low round of 69 for the weekend after carding five birdies on Sunday. He had three on the front nine to go two under at the turn and added two more on the backside to offset two bogeys.
Madsen finished the day even while adding three more birdies to his tournament total of 12. He sat at two under following hole No. 13 but a double bogey on No. 14 pushed him back to even. He closed out the tournament with four consecutive pars for a 71 on the day.
Capan had his best round of the weekend with Sunday’s score of 71. After going two over through his first nine holes, he carded two birdies and had six pars to pull back to one under. A bogey on his final hole gave him an even for the day.
Salanito shot 75 with three birdies in the third round, while Holmgren went seven over to finish with a 78.
Like Capan, Tschopp also posted his best round of the weekend with a 72 on Sunday thanks to five birdies on the day to finish one over.
The Eagles carded 45 birdies overall in the three day tournament along with two eagles. Madsen’s 12 birdies sat as the third most for an individual, while Tschopp and Hopkins were just behind with 10.
Following the weekend trip to South Carolina, the Eagles will host the Old Corkscrew Intercollegiate at the Old Corkscrew Golf Club in Estero on April 12-13.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 85 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 13+ seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just nine seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 40 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Eight FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including women’s basketball (No. 21, 2020-21), beach volleyball (No. 20, 2021) and both men’s soccer (2018, 2019) and women’s soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors’ Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA’s Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.50 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 23 consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall, 2020 Spring, and 2020 Fall semesters each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 – being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
