Final Tune-Up for Postseason on Tap as Women’s Golf Heads to Brickyard Collegiate

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The final regular-season tournament of the spring is on tap this Monday and Tuesday as the FGCU women’s golf team heads to Macon, Ga., to take part in the Brickyard Collegiate hosted by Mercer and the Brickyard Golf Club.
 
The tournament will begin on Monday morning at 8:30 AM with the Eagles beginning the day at hole No. 3 for the opening shotgun start on the par 72, 6218 yard course. Tuesday’s final round will begin at 8 AM with teams’ start times based on their leaderboard position. Spectators are welcome with CDC guidelines enforced. Live scoring will be available through www.GolfStat.com.
 
FGCU enters the competition ranked No. 87 in this week’s GolfStat.com team rankings. The 14-team field is led by No. 31 UCF followed by No. 42 North Florida. Overall, including the Green and Blue, 10 programs are ranked in the top 100 including host Mercer, South Florida, Furman, Kennesaw State, and Chattanooga which are all ahead of the Eagles providing opportunity to move up in the rankings with a strong performance.
 
Following Monday and Tuesday’s action, The Eagles will then have nearly two weeks to prepare for the 2021 ASUN Championship which will be hosted from April 18-20 at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga.
 
The Eagles are coming off a fourth-place showing at the Spring Break Shootout on March 15-16 in Dade City, Fla. Sophomore Sarah Edwards (Jay, Fla./Jay) and redshirt senior Ailsa Clark (Navarre, Fla./Navarre) finished among the top-15 individuals as they tied for fourth and 13th, respectively. For Edwards, it was her second top-five finish of the season (alongside winning the Mid-American Challenge) as she finished with a 54-hole score of 215. Clark posted her second-lowest score of the year at 219.
 
Overall, FGCU has finished among the top five teams in three-of-four tournaments this season.
 
Edwards leads the team with a 73.00 scoring average through 13 rounds played. That includes six rounds at par-or-better and three in the 60’s.
 
Junior Laura Edmonds (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Cypress Bay) is just a stroke behind with a 74.00 scoring average having played 10 rounds on the year, while Clark is third on the team with a 75.15 average.
 
Redshirt sophomore Haley Yerxa (Ottawa, Ontario/Hillcrest) and senior Natalia Nassar (Bucaramanga, Colombia/Colegio Panamericano) rounded out FGCU’s top-five scorers averaging 75.31 and 75.30 scores, respectively. Junior Sophia Warren (Lakewood Ranch, Fla./Seminole State College) will play as an individual for her fourth tournament appearance of the spring with a 76.00 scoring average.

Since taking over the program in 2011, Sarah Trew has guided the Eagles to 42 top-five finishes, including 30 over the past five seasons. On top of that, she led the program to a pair of second-place finishes in the ASUN Championship in 2016, 2017, and 2019, signifying the best finishes in program history. She was named the ASUN Coach of the Year in 2015-16 and has guided FGCU to some of its best statistical seasons in program history

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 85 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 13 seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just nine seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 38 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Seven FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including women’s basketball (No. 24, 2019-20) and both men’s soccer (2018, 2019) and women’s soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors’ Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA’s Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.46 GPA in the classroom in the spring 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 22 consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall and 2020 Spring semesters each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 – being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
