Dutch women’s golf team battles conditions

SILVIS, ILL.—Tackling a PGA course with British weather conditions, the Central College women’s golf team opened its spring slate in the middle of the pack at the TPC Deere Run Invitational Monday.

Standings were not yet available in the 13-team tourney.

Winds were as powerful as coach Tabitha Schumacher has ever endured on a golf course, she said.

“It was a huge test,” she said. “You’re guessing on every shot. Even 5-foot putts became really difficult.”

Freshmen Mackenzie Biggs (Bloomington, Ill., Normal HS) and Avery Woods (freshman, Long Grove, North Scott HS) each shot 89 while Delaney Underwood (sophomore, Mitchellville, Colfax-Mingo HS) had 90, Peyton Bytnar (freshman, Bettendorf) shot 99 and Whitney Anderson (sophomore, Sioux Rapids, Sioux Central HS) had 107. The Dutch also had two at-large individuals with Madison Clark (sophomore, Bloomington, Ill., Central Catholic HS) at 105 and Rachel Sohn (freshman, Sutherland, South O’Brien HS) at 114.

“The players felt like they left some shots out there, but overall, I was really proud of how they played,” Schumacher said.

Tuesday’s final round starts at 9 a.m.
