Willem II vs Feyenoord build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Historically, Willem II has blessed football with a number of Dutch stars including Virgil van Dijk, Frenkie de Jong and Marc Overmars but more recently they find themselves struggling in the lower half of the Eredivisie table (with the exception of a fifth-placed finish in 2019/20). Last season, Willem II finished 14th, just one point clear of the relegation play-off zone having won eight off their 34 matches. They had one of the worst defences in the league, with only the relegated two conceding more goals, while their 40 scored was also fairly low.

For Feyenoord, 2020/21 was also a disappointing season as they finished fifth in the league and had to make do with a place in the Europa Conference League second-qualifying round. The summer wasn’t much better either as they lost star man Steven Bergwijn to rivals Ajax, and Dick Advocaat was replaced in the dugout by Arne Slot. Due to their entrance in the Conference League second-round, Feyenoord have already played four competitive games, winning three of their four games to set up a play-off round tie against IF Elfsborg.

  • Willem II (vs Virton): Ruiter; Owusu, Bergstrom, Jenssen, John; Saddiki, Spieringhs, Saglam; Nunnely, Wriedt, Kohlert.
  • Feyenoord (vs FC Luzern): Bijlow; Pedersen, Trauner, Senesi, Malacia; Toornstra, Kokcu; Jahanbakhsh*, Til, Sinisterra; Linssen.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh picked up an injury in midweek and misses out for Feyenoord.

Player to watch: Guus Til (Feyenoord)

Although there were outgoings at Feyenoord, one of the incomings to Rotterdam was Guus Til, who signed on a one-year loan from Russian Premier League side Spartak Moscow.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder has been setting the Europa Conference League alight so far this season, netting five goals in four matches, including a hat-trick in Feyenoord’s 3-2 win over FC Drita to secure their passage into the next round. With Jahanbakhsh (who scored twice last time out) injured, Feyenoord will be more reliant on Til to work his magic.
