Why Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was the real hero for Tottenham during wild Steven Bergwijn goal celebration against Leicester City

Tottenham players, like their supporters, totally lost it when Steven Bergwijn scored their incredible stoppage-time winner against the Foxes – but one man saved the Dutchman from ignominy.

As all around him lost their heads, enraptured after witnessing Bergwijn round Kasper Schmeichel and slot home, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg had his wits about him.

His Dutch teammate, without a goal in the Premier League all season, ran towards the away fans to rightfully celebrate his match-winner.

But just as he hurdled the advertising hoardings, Danish ace Hojbjerg grabbed his arm desperately and pulled him back over onto the pitch.

The actions of the midfielder undoubtedly saved his teammate from a second yellow card, with Bergwijn already booked for shoving Caglar Soyuncu to the floor minutes earlier.

A red card would have been a terrible ending for Bergwijjn, returning to the team once more after injury.

Ajax are keen on the player and have even seen two bids rejected by Tottenham in the January transfer window.

But, after the astonishing 3-2 win, Spurs manager Antonio Conte revealed Bergwijn was part of his plans thanks to his unique skillset.

“I think I spoke about Steven in the past and I said he was an important player and he has specific characteristics for this team. Nobody has these types of characteristics,” the Italian told BT Sport.

“He’s very good one versus one, he’s good technically, he can beat a man, he’s a striker. If he is in good physical condition and he is fit, then for me, he’s an important choice I can make in the starting 11 or in the game.”

It was a good night for Hojbjerg too as he silenced some doubters with his involvement in the two goals.

He lofted the ball to Matt Doherty for Tottenham’s equaliser and then intercepted Youri Tielemans errant pass before laying on a pass to Harry Kane ahead of the the winner.
