‘When a club like Barca come knocking, you can’t say no’ – Midfielder Walsh’s first words

Midfielder Keira Walsh says that she was unable to turn down Barcelona’s approach for her services and that moving to the Catalan club was an easy decision to make.

The 25-year-old England international completed the move from Manchester City to Barcelona on Wednesday. The transfer has reportedly attracted a world record fee of around £400,000.

The move progressed at pace while Walsh was on international duty with England and she has now had the opportunity to link-up with her new club for the very first time.

In her first interview with the Spanish media, Walsh said that she couldn’t turn down the opportunity to join Barcelona.

“When a club like Barca come knocking, you can’t say no,” Walsh said. “It’s an unbelievable club with an unbelievable history and I have always looked up to Barca and the players that have played here.

“I wanted to grow as a player and as a person and to reach my individual goals so it was an easy choice for me.

“I’m happy to be here and I’m looking forward to playing in front of the crowd. Hopefully, I can make you proud in a Barca shirt.”

Walsh’s new challenge sees her tasked with growing into a new way of life and a new league. In her time at Manchester City, she developed from a young prospect into a star player, winning eight trophies along the way. One trophy has escaped Walsh’s grasp so far and there is no doubting what she now has her eyes firmly set upon.

She said “I want to grow as a person. This is out of my comfort zone as I have only ever lived in Manchester. I wanted to come to Spain, grow as a person and hopefully, win a lot of trophies including the Champions League.”

Walsh joins Manchester City and England teammate Lucy Bronze at the Primera Iberdrola club.
