What Ronaldo’s Juventus future looks like & Messi’s Barcelona contract expires at midnight

Barcelona to lose Messi?

As each season ends, clubs are of course faced with the tasking of then trying to keep hold of their top stars for the following campaign.

In some cases this proves a lot harder of a task then others, especially when a players contract is expiring.

This summer we have already seen a number o high-profile players whose contracts were due to expire at the end of June, link up with new clubs.

FC Barcelona have been the greatest beneficiary of this so far during 2021. The Spanish outfit have already snapped up Sergio Aguero from Manchester City, Memphis Depay from Lyon and Eric Garcia from Man City also.

The former of the trio may now be somewhat past his best, but landing Depay and Garcia on frees is a great bit of business for almost any side.

Elsewhere, Barca did look to be eyeing Georginio Wijnaldum, who had a solid Euro 2020 and has been a mainstay in Liverpool’s midfield for many years now. However, the Dutchman instead opted to join PSG on a free – perhaps the best bit of business done so far this window?

By far and away the biggest player currently set to become a free agent, though, is Lionel Messi.

The Argentine has been integral to Barcelona’s success in recent years, but is, at present, yet to agree to a new deal, meaning his current contract will expire at midnight on June 30th.

Ronaldo future update

This is a situation Juventus are no doubt keen to avoid with their superstar player, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Unlike Messi, Ronaldo does currently have one year left on his deal.

However, if no new terms are agreed, Ronaldo could sign an agreement with a foreign club as early as January before then leaving on a free next summer.

If no new contract is agreed, it would make sense for Juve to sell the Portuguese this summer to recoup some of the money they paid for him.

And, at present, it appears that Ronaldo may well be sold this summer. An update from Fabrizio Romano on Ronaldo’s current contract situation claims that he is not negotiating a new contract with Juventus as of today, with the club now waiting for Ronaldo and his agent to decide if they are leaving Juventus this summer or not.

154 Premier League footballers will become free agents on July 1, 2021
