France’s winless run extended to five games after being held to a 1-1 draw by Ukraine in Kiev in World Cup qualifying on Saturday.
The world champions have battled for efficiency in front of goal in recent matches and were without the injured Kylian Mbappe against the Euro 2020 quarter-finalists.
After Antoine Griezmann bounced a shot wide and Andriy Yarmolenko had a volley saved, France should have taken the lead when Paul Pogba played in Anthony Martial but he was denied by the onrushing Andriy Pyatov.
Moments later the hosts went ahead as a loose ball fell to Mykola Shaparenko on the edge of the box and he lashed home a curling 44th minute strike.
Les Bleus leveled after the break from Kingsley Coman’s dangerous ball into the box, with Martial powering past Pyatov, who could not hold it back.
France had further chances from Griezmann, Kurt Zouma and Moussa Diaby, with the latter hitting the post late.
The result means France have not won since their opening Euro 2020 game against Germany and leaves their World Cup qualifying group open, with nine points from five games, four ahead of both Finland and Ukraine.
Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps said: “This is not the result that we wanted to come and get. The draw gives us one more point and we are still in the best position compared to Ukraine. But to be satisfied with that, it was not the ambition we had at the start of the match.”
Elsewhere, the Netherlands found form with a commanding 4-0 win over Montenegro with Memphis Depay hitting a double.
Marcelo Brozovic scored late to earn Croatia a 1-0 win away to Slovakia, while Turkey won 3-0 in Gibraltar.
Erling Haaland netted as Norway won 2-0 at Latvia, Russia got past Cyprus 2-0 away, while the Republic of Ireland stumbled to a 1-1 home draw with Azerbaijan.
Israel hammered Austria 5-2, Scotland beat Moldova 1-0, Serbia won 4-1 over Luxembourg and Euro 2020 semi-finalists Denmark edged Faroe Islands 1-0 thanks to a late Jonas Wind strike.
