Tottenham are plotting a summer move for Villarreal’s Pau Torres as the defender looks to leave the club at the end of the season.
Pau Torres, 25, was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham in 2021 but a move didn’t materialise as he wanted to play in this year’s Champions League. The decision was justified as the centre-back helped Villarreal reach the semi-finals of the competition before crashing out to Liverpool earlier this week.
Tottenham have since been linked with another swoop for the Spanish international ahead of the summer transfer window. It is reported that Spurs sent scouts to watch Torres in action in Villarreal’s defeat to Liverpool in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final in Spain. The north London club have been given encouragement they could strike a deal for Torres in the summer, with the 25-year-old now ready to leave the Yellow Submarine and take the next step in his career.
Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea have also shown interest in Torres but Spurs feel they can give him the perfect platform to develop his career, provided they meet Villarreal’s asking price. The La Liga club are expected to demand a fee closer to the 25-year-old central defender’s £55m release clause.
Antonio Conte wants to 3-4 signings
Tottenham boss Antonio Conte wants to bring in three to four fresh faces before the new season commences, but the club must sell first to balance its books.
Under Conte, Spurs are targeting a top-four spot and Champions League football next season. The club backed the Italian tactician in the January window by signing Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus and would look to provide him with the tools to build a formidable side in north London.
With Manchester City and Liverpool being the two best teams in Europe at the moment, Arsenal improving under Mikel Arteta and Manchester United set to embark on the Erik ten Hag era, it becomes really imperative for Tottenham to bolster their squad by making quality signings.
Pau Torres could be a top buy for Spurs
One of the areas Antonio Conte wants to improve is the defence, with Spurs conceding 39 goals in 34 games so far this season. While they have become more robust defensively under the Italian’s tutelage, there are still holes that need plugging.
Cristian Romero, Eric Dier and Ben Davies have formed a strong back three for Spurs in recent months. However, Conte is keen on adding a defender and has Pau Torres on his wishlist.
A sought-after defender, Torres could be ideal for the left-sided role in Conte’s Spurs side. The Spanish international is a stylish ball-playing centre-back who rarely flusters in pressure situations and can initiate attacks with utmost ease and poise. He would be an instant upgrade on Ben Davies and solidify the Spurs’ backline.
That being said, Tottenham must make a fresh bid for Torres and aim to lure him away from Villarreal.
