Timbers Earn 3-2 Road Victory against Vancouver Whitecaps FC

VANCOUVER, B.C. – The Portland Timbers earned a 3-2 victory tonight against Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place. Dairon Asprilla converted a penalty kick to give Portland the lead going into halftime. Jaroslaw Niezgoda doubled the lead in the second half, but Vancouver drew one back to make it 2-1. Yimmi Chara provided the final insurance goal, just before the Whitecaps earned two separate penalty kicks in the final stretch of the match. Aljaz Ivacic saved the first but conceded the second.


Timbers Offensive Form

Five different players have scored in the 2022 campaign for the Timbers, with four of them tallying two or more (Dairon Asprilla, Yimmi Chara, Jaroslaw Niezgoda, Bill Tuiloma). Portland’s four different players with two or more goals is a league best in the 2022 season. Tonight, Dairon Asprilla, Yimmi Chara and Jaroslaw Niezgoda tallied a goal each. It marked Asprilla and Niezgoda’s second goals of the season, and Y. Chara’s third. Y. Chara leads the team in goals (3) and assists (3), for a team-high nine points. Notably, tonight marked the fourth time Y. Chara has registered a goal and an assist in a single match for the Timbers, and second time this season. Sebastián Blanco also tallied an assist, his second of the 2022 campaign. The Timbers have scored in 14 consecutive MLS matches, dating back to Oct. 27, 2021, recording 25 goals in that stretch.

100 Matches Between Cascadia Rivals

Tonight’s match marked a special night in the storied history between the Timbers and Whitecaps FC. The two Pacific Northwest clubs met for the 100th time across NASL, USL and MLS play, dating back to 1975. Portland trails in the all-time series with a record of 40-42-18. In MLS regular season play, Portland leads the series 15-9-6. With tonight’s win, the Timbers have served the Whitecaps their only two losses since returning to their home stadium last August, including Portland’s 1-0 win at BC Place on September 1, 2021. Notably, Portland has the best record against any Western Conference team as visitors at BC Place with a record of 8-6-2, including postseason.

Goal-Scoring Plays

POR – Dairon Asprilla, 42nd minute: Marvin Loría drew a foul in the box to earn a penalty kick. Dairon Asprilla converted the penalty, sending the ball near the top left corner of the goal.

POR – Jaroslaw Niezgoda (Sebastián Blanco, Yimmi Chara) 60th minute: Yimmi Chara crossed the ball from the right wing of the field into the midfield to Sebastián Blanco. Blanco turned and played it into the box for Jaroslaw Niezgoda, who dribbled in and around Vancouver’s defense and fired a left-footed shot into the back of the net.

VAN – Cristian Dajome (Javain Brown, Deiber Caicedo), 76th minute: Javain Brown crossed the ball into the 18-yard box, finding Deiber Caicedo. He cut it back towards the penalty spot for Cristian Dajome, who curled it into the top right corner of the goal.

POR – Yimmi Chara, 78th minute: Sebastián Blanco threaded a pass into the right side of the 18-yard box for Yimmi Chara. Y. Chara took a touch through traffic, bounced it off a Vancouver defender and recovered possession, and drilled it into the upper right hard corner of the goal.

VAN – Ryan Gauld (penalty kick), 90+6 minute: Vancouver earned a penalty kick. Gauld converted it into the top left corner of the goal.

Notes

Tonight was Portland and Vancouver’s 100th meeting all time across NASL, USL and MLS play (40-42-18), dating back to 1975.

The Timbers are the only team in the league to have four different goal scorers with two or more goals each this season (Asprilla, Y.Chara, Niezgoda, Bill Tuiloma).

With the win, the Timbers have served the Whitecaps their only two losses since returning to their home stadium last August, including Portland’s 1-0 win at BC Place on September 1, 2021.

Portland scored three goals for the first time of the 2022 campaign tonight, recording its first road win of the year.

Yimmi Chara has tallied three goals and three assists in seven games this season, totaling nine points.

Y. Chara has recorded three goals and two assists in six career games against the Whitecaps.

Jaroslaw Niezgoda tallied his second goal of the regular season.

Sebastián Blanco registered his second assist of the regular season.

Aljaz Ivacic faced a penalty kick for the first time in his MLS career twice in tonight’s match, saving one.

Marvin Loría earned his first start of the year.

Larrys Mabiala earned his first start in his 2022 season debut. It was Mabiala’s 110th regular season appearance.

Portland has scored in 14 consecutive MLS matches dating back to October 27, 2021, tallying 25 goals during that stretch.

Next Game

The Timbers will travel to Houston to take on Dynamo FC on Saturday, April 16, at PNC Stadium. The match kicks off at 3 p.m. (Pacific) with a local television broadcast on FOX 12 PLUS and radio broadcasts on 750 The Game (English) and La GranD 1150AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).
