Flamengo made a confirmation on Friday that defender Thuler would be loaned to Ligue 1 side Montpellier in France, which will last until June next year (2022).
The one-year agreement, will earn the club about 200,000 euros (R$1.2 million at current exchange rates), with Montpellier having the option to buy the player on a permanent basis for 2.5 million euros (roughly R$14 million).
Both teams struck an agreement in February, but the deal was only recently completed because the European transfer market closed in January and reopens in July.
Thuler, who is looking forward to the transfer, arrived in France after the agreement was reached, was quarantined, and then underwent medical exams before signing the contract.
The transfer has been finalized, though the clubs have yet to determine on the exact date Thuler will be introduced as a new player in his new club and unveiled to his new fans.
The 22-year-old defender was identified in Flamengo’s youth divisions, but had limited playing time whilst being promoted to the first team. In 42 games with the professional rubro-negro club, he scored two goals.
This season, he appeared in 12 games, nine of them as a starter, and scored one goal. On November 24, he was sent off in the first leg of the Libertadores round of 16 match against Racing.
Still only 22, the loan move would come good for Thuler who could be afforded more first team opportunities with Montpellier. Should he come good and impress in the course of his loan, Flamengo would be getting back a proper defender with his best years ahead of him. If they also decide to sell him, it could also make for a decent sale. However it may be, it is a good move from Flamengo.
