England head coach Sarina Wiegman says that she is expecting a tough test from Germany in her side’s last Arnold Clark Cup match despite their depleted squad.
The Lionesses face their bitter rivals at Molineux in Wolverhampton on Wednesday evening. Wiegman’s side may need to be victorious in the match to win the tournament depending on the result of the Canada and Spain game earlier in the day.
England’s opponents Germany came into the tournament without a whole host of players due to injury, COVID-19 and illness and will therefore again line-up as a weakened side. When speaking in the pre-match press conference, England boss Wiegman said that Germany are always a tough opponent despite the fact that they are missing many of their top players.
“They still have a very strong squad and they are always a very good team,” Wiegman said. “Even though they are missing some good players, they have been able to bring in some very good players to replace them.
“We expect a good Germany and a very competitive game. They have a lot of speed and power so we will be prepared just like we were against Canada and Spain.”
England battled out a goalless draw with Spain in their last match at the Arnold Clark Cup and Wiegman is looking for her side to be more clinical in the final third against Germany.
She said “I’ve seen a lot from us and I just want to see us take the next step tomorrow. We want to improve again in all of the different moments of the game.
“I thought that we created some good chances against Spain but we would really like to score a goal. We want to take that next step and that means better decision-making between players and just being ruthless.”
The Arnold Clark Cup match between England and Germany kicks-off at 7.30pm on Wednesday night.
