An insight into the future of Raheem Sterling at Manchester City has been provided on Tuesday.

Sterling out of favour

Towards the end of last season, Raheem Sterling fell out of favour at Manchester City.

The Englishman, once one of City’s star men, was being used as a bit-part player in the Sky Blues’ second team.

Instead, Phil Foden, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan were all being deployed ahead of Sterling in City’s bigger games.

In the league, Sterling did actually continue to keep playing regularly, but this was due to City already having the title wrapped up and Pep instead opting to use his first-team in the key Champions League clashes.

Sterling’s reduced role has continued into the 2021/22 season as well. So far, the winger has started in just two of Manchester City’s league games this term, with both Jack Grealish and Ferran Torres taking minutes away from him.

Sterling’s Man City future

Now, as mentioned above, an insight into Sterling’s Man City future has been provided

Speaking on his podcast on Tuesday, Fabrizio Romano would claim that Man City wanted to sell Sterling if they got the Cristiano Ronaldo deal done:

“During the summer they were thinking of Barcelona and then when they wanted Cristiano Ronaldo and they were thinking of the Cristiano Ronaldo deal, they were planning to sell Sterling to some club around Europe because you Juventus were not planning for this deal, but to some club around Europe.”

And whilst that of course did not happen, Romano added that the upcoming summer will now be key for Sterling’s future as if he does not extend his current contract by May, he will see the chance of leaving City in the 2022 summer window:

“Now they need to make a decision, if extending his contract that is out in 2023, or sell the player in the summer .

“So summer is key for Raheem Sterling. If they will extend the contract before May of course he will stay. If not, he will yes see the chances to leave Manchester City next summer.”
