Two nations opening their European adventure this weekend, Wales and Switzerland will face off in Baku for their first Group A matchup on Saturday.
Starting with Wales, failing to bounce back from that routine 3-0 defeat away in Paris against defending world champions France last week, The Dragons put in another toothless display on home soil. Missing out on a real chance to gain some much-needed momentum, caretaker boss Robert Page saw his side have to settle for a 0-0 stalemate against Albania last time out. Opening up their major tournament return with a tricky test, Page should also have a headache over his side’s struggles outside of Cardiff. Including back-to-back away defeats against France and Belgium, a 1-0 win against Bulgaria eight months ago is their only victory on foreign soil in their last five attempts.
As for Switzerland, while Wales might have struggled to find much momentum heading into this summer’s delayed European Championships, The Reds laid down a real marker. Last seen signing off their preparations with a thumping 7-0 win against Liechtenstein, Vladimir Petković’s side won each of their three friendly matchups, including victories against the USA and Finland. Only continuing to build off of their rampant run during March’s World Cup qualifiers, Rossocrociati find themselves enjoying a real purple patch. Winning each of their last six straight contests across all formats, along with signing their Nations League run with a 3-0 romp against Ukraine, The Swiss are in the midst of their longest winning run since 2017.
