Spurs join race to sign Arsenal transfer target Aouar

Tottenham have reportedly joined the race the sign Lyon’s Houssem Aouar, with their north London rivals Arsenal also in hot pursuit of the midfielder.

This is according to French outlet Le10Sport, who say Aouar could be available for between £20-25million.

The Gunners were heavily linked last summer and have apparently reignited their interest and will aim to finally bring him to the Emirates in this transfer window.

The report has claimed that talks are already proceeding in regards to a Spurs transfer, and coughing up Lyon’s asking price could help them take the lead in the race for Aouar’s signature.

Neither Spurs or Arsenal will play in the Champions League next season, but luckily for them, neither will Lyon.

Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid are also interested in the 23-year-old, who both play in Europe’s most prestigious club competition.

Aouar made 30 Ligue 1 appearances last season, scoring seven goals and assisting three times.

ESPN have also reported this week that if Arsenal are to sign the France international they will have to sell at least one more player.

Matteo Guendouzi has left on loan to Marseille, Lucas Torreira is surplus to requirements, and Granit Xhaka has been linked with a move to AS Roma.

Emile Smith Rowe has been the subject of two bids from Aston Villa and is apparently “blown away” by the club’s interest in him.

Smith Rowe had an excellent 2020/21 season, and it is unlikely that he will make way for the signing of Aouar.

Whether ESPN’s report is true or not remains to be seen, but more outgoings are certainly on the horizon for Mikel Arteta.

The imminent signing of Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht could also be a contributing factor to this rumour.

Lokonga made 27 league appearances last season, scoring three goals.

The Belgian will play in a deeper midfield position in Arteta’s system and should be a direct replacement for Guendouzi.

“I will not go to a club which is inferior to Anderlecht,” Lokonga told Belgian media last month.

“I will only leave Anderlecht if all the ingredients are there. Yes, I feel ready to take a step forward and rub shoulders with great players, but everything will depend on the proposals that will be made during this summer.”
