SEATTLE, WASH. – Following a 1-1 draw with the Colorado Rapids in the Rocky Mountains, first-place Seattle Sounders FC (17-6-7, 58 points) returns to the Emerald City for a pivotal Western Conference matchup against second-place Sporting Kansas City (15-7-7, 52 points) Saturday afternoon at Lumen Field.
With the road result in Colorado, Seattle locked up a top-four spot in the Western Conference standings, assuring the side a home playoff game in the 2021 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. Sporting Kansas City can secure a postseason berth with a win on Saturday, in addition to a number of scenarios the club can clinch with a loss or draw.
The two sides have faced off against each other two other times this season, with each squad winning on the road. A contest at Lumen Field on July 25 saw Sporting secure all three points, fighting to a 3-1 victory. The Rave Green got their revenge on September 26 when they traveled to Children’s Mercy Park and left with a 2-1 victory. The latter result vaulted Seattle into the top spot in the Western Conference, a position they have held since.
Seattle holds the advantage in the all-time regular-season series between the two sides with a 10-8-4 record against SKC (5-4-2 both at home and away).
Following Seattle’s match against Sporting Kansas City, the squad will once again hit the road, this time for a matchup against LAFC on Tuesday, October 26 (7:30 p.m. PT / ESPN, KJR 1090 AM, El Rey 1360 AM).
