Slovakia defeats USA Ice hockey, cross-country skiing Australai, Jarl Magnus Riiber silly mistake costs gold medal

Australia’s bid for a medal in the cross-country team sprint classic didn’t go to plan for both the men’s and women’s pairs.

Australian duo Jess Yeaton and Casey Wright kick-started the action today in the women’s event.

But needing to finish fourth in their semi-final to advance, they fell short in eighth place.

With a time of 25:13.42, they were 16th overall.

“I think it was the toughest sprint course either of us have ever done and I’m really proud of our performance. It was a good effort,” Yeaton told AOC.

Wright added: “It was fun to be out there. In an individual sport we just don’t get the opportunity to race as often in this format and it does mean a lot to have to push yourself for your teammate.”

Meanwhile, fellow Australian pair Phil Bellingham and Seve de Campo also missed out on a spot in the men’s team sprint classic finals.

Needing to finish in the top four as well, Bellingham and de Campo came in at 11th, and 22nd overall with a time of 21:17.35.

“It started off really smoothly and getting a rhythm and then it started to open up. I could match it for a while, but a bit of a bummer not to beat the British team in the end… (finishing 2.08 seconds faster than the Aussies) at least we get to go back to Australia at the end,” de Campo said.
