Should Chelsea consider signing Robert Lewandowski in the summer?

Robert Lewandowski could be on his way out of Bayern Munich this summer, with his agent Pini Zahavi in contact with a lot of elite European clubs.

The Poland international, 32, last put pen to paper in 2019, signing a contract extension at Bayern Munich until 2023. But his agent Pini Zahavi is looking to grab a pay rise for his client, even though Bayern Munich are reluctant to entertain any offers for their goal machine.

Zahavi, 77, tried his best to secure Robert Lewandowski a move to the Premier League back in 2018, before the World Cup in Russia. Chelsea and Manchester United were strongly linked with the Polish striker, while Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid also showed an interest. However, the Bavarians managed to keep hold of their star striker by giving him a hefty pay rise and a two-year contract extension in 2019.

Robert Lewandowski has established himself as one of the most prolific goalscorers in the game since joining Bayern Munich on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund back in 2014. Over the past seven years, the Pole has been consistently delivering the goods for the Bundesliga giants. He has played a major role in the Bavarians’ dominance in Bundesliga, whilst helping the club win the coveted Champions League last year.

With rumours of the 32-year-old leaving Bayern after seven trophy-laden years, should Chelsea reignite their interest in the prolific striker?

Chelsea need a prolific goalscorer next season to challenge for the Premier League title

Chelsea took a big leap towards a top-four finish with a 2-0 victory over London rivals Fulham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Thomas Tuchel’s side are fourth in the table following back-to-back wins, just three points above fifth-placed West Ham, who won 2-1 against Burnley on Monday.

The Blues, who lock horns with Real Madrid in the second-leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday evening at Stamford Bridge, have improved massively since Thomas Tuchel arrived at the club in January. Chelsea have become defensively robust under Tuchel, conceding just nine goals in 23 games across all competitions. However, they haven’t been that great going forward.

Timo Werner and Kai Havertz have failed to hit the heights expected of them in their first season at Stamford Bridge, scoring 11 and eight goals each respectively. Olivier Giroud has never really managed to establish himself as a regular starter since arriving at Chelsea from Arsenal in 2018, while Tammy Abraham has been in and out of the team and could leave the club at the end of the season, with Leicester City interested.

If Chelsea are to challenge for the Premier League title next season, they must invest in a ruthless striker in the upcoming transfer window.

Robert Lewandowski would be a brilliant addition to Chelsea’s squad

In that regard, Robert Lewandowski would be an ideal fit at Stamford Bridge. The 32-year-old has netted 289 goals in 329 appearances for Bayern—the astounding numbers clearly demonstrate his ruthless nature in front of goal. One of the best poachers in the game, the Pole can immediately make an impact at Chelsea and take the club to a new level.

Given his undying hunger for goals and rich experience, Lewandowski could be that man to solve the Blues’ goalscoring conundrum next season, whilst his winning mentality could rub off on Tuchel’s squad. Thus, Chelsea must revive their interest in the Polish centre-forward and attempt to sign him before the 2021/22 campaign begins.
