Sheffield United have been offered the chance to sign £6 million Sampdoria midfielder Ronaldo Vieira with the former Leeds youngster potentially heading back to Yorkshire, as reported by the Athletic.

While sharing a name with not one but two of the 21st century’s most iconic footballers, it is worth pointing out that Vieira shares more similarities with the former Arsenal captain than Juventus’s evergreen superstar.

A powerhouse of a midfielder who often ran the show from the centre of the park while still a teenager at Elland Road, it is tempting to wonder what would have become of Ronaldo Vieira had the England U21 international not been sold just weeks after the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa in 2018.

While Kalvin Phillips, Luke Ayling, Gianni Alioski and Patrick Bamford have been transformed into Premier League stars by one of world football’s most iconic managerial minds, the now-22-year-old Vieira has found opportunities hard to come by in Serie A.

He was restricted to just two league starts during an injury-hit loan spell at Hellas Verona last season.

According to the Athletic, Sampdoria are now looking to cash in on a player they spent £6 million on, offering Sheffield United the chance to bring Vieira back to familiar surroundings.

It is understood the youngster’s family are still based in the rolling hills of Yorkshire too.

Vieira’s ability to control the tempo from a number six role means he should fit in well under a possession-based coach like Slavisa Jokanovic, especially if flanked by the box-to-box John Fleck.

Bringing in the Bissau-born enforcer could ease the fears surrounding Sander Berge’s future too, even if reports linking the £35 million Norwegian with moves to Everton, Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa have gone quiet of late.
