According to TransferMarket, Shanghai SIPG have confirmed the signing of Changchun Yatai centre back Yu Rui.

Rumours of a potential deal had increased at a rapid pace over the past few days, with the 27-year-old veteran joining for a reported £2.34 million.

Yu originally joined the 2007 Chinese Super League champions from Beijing Renhe for around £630k back in 2017 and had established himself as a mainstay in their starting XI, making 56 appearances with eight goals and three assists in all competitions.

When the club suffered relegation to China League One after the 2018 season, Yu remained with the club in an attempt to secure promotion at the first time of asking.

With the club falling on the last day of the season, finishing in fifth place, Yu has made the decision to join one of the strongest teams in the country.

The move shows Yu Rui betting on himself, with a starting role far from a guarantee with the likes of Shi Ke, He Guan and Wei Zhen providing tough competition.

For Shanghai SIPG, the move provides the club with excellent depth in the heart of the defence and gives them a player that will be determined to prove his worth in the country’s largest city.
