Segerstrom High has canceled its season-opening football game Thursday, March 18 against Laguna Beach and its game next week against La Mirada because of a positive COVID-19 test within its program, Jaguars coach Joseph Tagaloa confirmed.
Tagaloa said one of his players tested positive for the virus, forcing players considered to be in “close contact” to quarantine and leaving the team without enough players to take the field.
The coach called the cancellation “unfortunate” but described the infected player is asymptomatic, or showing no symptoms. The squad, he said, aims to play its three games in the Big 4 League to complete the coronavirus-delayed season.
“It feels like forever since we’ve been on the field,” said Tagaloa, whose squad last played in November 2019. “We’re still able to play all our league games and compete for a league championship.”
Segerstrom is scheduled to open the league April 1 against Katella at Glover Stadium.
La Mirada remains scheduled to play Orange this Thursday and has booked a game against El Toro on March 25, Matadores coach Mike Moschetti said.
El Toro had its season-opening game against Troy last week canceled because of a coronavirus case with Westminster, which had scrimmaged against Troy.
Westminster on Tuesday canceled its game this against Katella on Friday because of “limited available roster this week.”
