Scotland Appoint Pedro Martinez Losa as Women’s Manager – Sport Grill

Pedro Martinez Losa has been appointed as the new manager of Scotland’s National Women’s Team on a three year-contract.

This move sees Losa moves into international management after spending the last two years managing Bordereaux, having previously managed Rayo Vallecano and Arsenal amongst other previous female clubs.

Losa’s appointment also sees him reunite with Lisa Evans, Kim Little, Emma Mitchell, Christie Murray and Caroline Weir, having previously coached those players at Arsenal.

Losa replaces Shelley Kerr as permanent manager after the latter stood down in late December after tendering her resignation, following the team’s failure to qualify for UEFA Women’s Euro 2022

Speaking on his decision to step up to international management, Losa said: “It has been a long-held ambition of mine to coach a women’s national team so today represents a tremendous honour for me as I take charge of Scotland.”

The Spaniard also spoke of having “admired” Scotland from a distance as the Tartan Army reached 2017 Women’s Euros and 2019 FIFA World Cup, before they fell short in their bid to qualify for next summer’s Euros which is set to be hosted in England.

Losa has therefore vowed to “return” Scotland to major tournaments whilst praising their “abundance of international talent alongside a well balanced mix of youth and experience throughout the squad,” which was a huge factor in his decision to take up the job.

Beyond on-pitch results, Losa also revealed that he wants to help “inspire the next generation of female players” as women’s football continues to grow rapidly, whilst iterating that the current squad has to “spearhead” that push with strong wins on the pitch.

Scottish FA Chief Executive, Ian Maxwell, added that Losa’s experience in the game packed with success across the world “set him apart” from various alternative candidates, enabling him to already possess the attributes which will help the team to fulfil their potential.

Losa’s debut as Scotland Women’s manager will take place in 2023 FIFA World Cup Qualifying on 17 September 2021 away to Hungary before the Tartan Army host the Faroe Islands on 21 September.
