RIO DE JANEIRO, May 5 (Xinhua) — River Plate’s perfect start to the Copa Libertadores group stage ended on Thursday when they were held to a 1-1 draw at Fortaleza.
Silvio Romero put the hosts ahead with a fourth-minute strike, just the second time that the Argentine side has conceded in four matches so far this competition.
Enzo Fernandez equalized in the 17th minute by converting from the penalty spot after Marcelo Benevenuto brought down Tomas Pochettino.
Romero then went from hero to villain when he was shown a straight red card for a bad challenge with 10 minutes remaining.
But River were unable to capitalize on the numerical advantage as Fortaleza defended defiantly to secure a valuable point.
The result at the Castelao stadium in northeastern Brazil left River with 10 points from four matches, six points ahead of Fortaleza.
