Real Salt Lake Fall 2-1 at the Colorado Rapids

August 22, 2021 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – Real Salt Lake News Release

SANDY, Utah – Real Salt Lake (7-7-6, 27 points) suffered a 2-1 defeat at the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night in a fiery Rocky Mountain Cup affair at Dicks Sporting Goods Park.

Albert Rusnak scored his fifth goal of the season to open the scoring but a second half surge from the Rapids was enough to claim victory in Commerce City.

RSL came out with a strong press in the first half, pestering Colorado’s backline and forcing the goalkeeper to make several saves. RSL almost found the lead in the 34th minute when Albert Rusnak sent a freekick to Justen Glad, leading to Rubio Rubin putting the ball into the back of the net, but video review determined Glad to be in an offside position. From there neither team found the opener and went into the halftime break scoreless.

RSL broke the stalemate in the 51st minute when Rusnak connected on a cross from Aaron Herrera to take the lead. But Colorado was quick to respond with two goals in quick succession from Diego Rubio in the 64th minute to erase the deficit and Mark-Anthony Kaye in the 71st minute to take the lead.

It seemed as if RSL might have a chance to draw the match level when the team was awarded a penalty kick, but video review judged Damir Kreilach to be in an offside position prior to the foul in the 81st minute. In the final moments RSL continued to press for an equalizer and had several chances at goal, but to no avail and the match ended 2-1 in favor of the home team.

UP NEXT: Real Salt Lake will now head to Canada to face Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Sunday, August 29 at 8:00 p.m. MT.
