Real Madrid join Arsenal in the race to sign £60m Sweden star Isak

Real Madrid have joined Arsenal in the race to sign £60m Sweden star Alexander Isak, following the forward’s impressive performances at Euro 2020.

Isak has emerged as one of the best young players at the finals after starring during Sweden’s progression to the knockout stages as group winners, with the 21-year-old’s all-action style leading the line and winning admirers from Europe’s leading clubs.

Arsenal have been credited with an interest in the Real Sociedad starlet, who was named as La Liga’s best young player after scoring 17 league goals for the Spanish side in 2020/21.

Mikel Arteta is believed to be keen on strengthening his forward options as he overhauls his squad at the Emirates this summer, with uncertainty surrounding the futures of both Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah.

Isak is understood to have a release clause of €70m (£60m) in his contract, though AS are reporting that Real Madrid have now entered the race for his signature with new manager Carlo Ancelotti keen to sign a new centre-forward.

Real remain reliant on Karim Benzema for goals with no other player having managed double figures across all competitions last term and Isak could prove the perfect long-term replacement for the France international.

Chelsea and Liverpool have previously been mentioned as potential suitors for the Swede, though a return to Borussia Dortmund appears unlikely after Sociedad reportedly paid a free to remove the Bundesliga side’s buy-back option in Isak’s contract.

Isak has scored 33 goals in 89 appearances across two seasons for Sociedad and has netted six times in 24 appearances for Sweden, including becoming the nation’s youngest ever goalscorer as a 17-year-old in 2017.
