Real Betis vs Roma build-up & previous line-ups:

Last season Real Betis matched their best La Liga finish since the 2004/05 season. Manuel Pellegrini’s men ended in sixth place, the same position Quique Setién achieved a few years ago (2017/18), consequently they secured qualification for Europa League football. Preparation for the upcoming season, in terms of results, hasn’t gone entirely to plan. Across five pre-season friendlies they’ve picked up two wins — against Winterthur and Leeds United — whilst suffering three losses including to Almeria last time out.

A new era at Roma is underway with much-travelled and trophy-laden José Mourinho at the helm. He returned to Serie A following a decade away when he won back-to-back Scudetto’s with Inter Milan. Pre-season has gone smoothly well for the Giallorossi with them having won five of their previous seven club friendlies this summer. The matches Roma did not run out as winners came against Mourinho’s former club Porto (1-1) and Sevilla (0-0).

Player to watch: Edin Džeko (Roma)

There were mumurings last season that Edin Džeko could be on his way out of Roma but as things currently stand he’s Mourinho’s first choice to lead the Roman forward line. Since joining from Manchester City, initially on loan, the Bosnian marksman has been nothing short of a revelation. He goes into this season having registered 121 goals across 260 appearances in all competitions. Only club icons Francesco Totti (307) and Roberto Pruzzo (138) sit above him in the club’s all-time top goalscorers list. The former Wolfsburg man has sporadically featured in Roma’s friendlies this summer and last time out against Belenenses he netted his third in their pre-season preparations.
