Malmo manager Jon Dahl Tomasson knows Rangers are heavily fancied ahead of their Champions League clash – but he’s warned Steven Gerrard “it’s not always the favourites who win.”
The Swedish side will welcome Rangers to Malmo this week before the return leg in Ibrox seven days later and Tomasson is aware his side need something special to dispatch of Gerrard’s Premiership champions.
Malmo are looking to use every advantage at their disposal and Tomasson’s team have been given a free weekend by the Swedish FA to prepare for the game.
“I think we needed it,” the manager said. “We played every third day for more or less a whole month, so I think it was good for the bodies and the heads that we got a few days off.
We’re testing a new site:
“We’ve now have some had time to prepare well for the match. When we qualify for Europe, it’s important that we create the best opportunities for the teams in Sweden that will go into Europe.
“Sweden is the 23rd best league in Europe and it is of course not good if you want to be a better country.”
It was pointed out to Tomasson that Rangers are the favourites heading into the tie and he wasn’t disputing that is the case.
But he was quick to point out that stranger things have happened in football even if Rangers have the depth to field two XIs who could give his side a game.
“Even the favourites can be 3-0 up at half-time and still lose the game,” he went on.
“So it’s not impossible to lose a game when you’re favourites.
“Rangers have two great teams. They can put two great teams on the pitch. It’s a club with tremendous history.
“Its good to see them back where they belong actually.
“The club and the manager Steven Gerrard have done an excellent job. Of course they’re the favourites but football is tough and it’s not always the favourites who win.”
