Rangers’ James Tavernier celebrated his goal on Thursday with a tribute to his new-born son

And Tavernier was flooded with messages of congratulation – with the likes of Steven Gerrard, Alan Hutton, and Scott Arfield all wishing him well.

They all took to the comments to post their well wishes – and were joined by plenty more current and former Ibrox heroes.

Gerrard wrote: “Congratulations Tav.”

Hutton added “Congratulations” with former Ibrox star Daniel Candeias adding: “congrats capi.”

Tavernier revealed he had promised his wife he would mark the occasion with a celebratory goal after his son had been born just two days before the Europa League clash.

He said post-match: “My wife gave birth to our baby daughter a couple of days ago.

“That was part of the celebration so I’m buzzing.

“She asked if I would do a celebration so I had to get on the scoresheet.

“I’m buzzing for that, but just happy to help the boys and get a 3-0 to take into next week.”

Tavernier’s celebration came after he opened the scoring from the spot on Thursday night.

The 30-year-old converted his penalty after Ryan Kent was judged to have been fouled by Red Star’s Slavoljub Smic.

And Ibrox was in dreamland just four minutes later when Alfredo Morelos doubled their advantage with a low driven finish.

The Serbian giants though looked to have found a route back in when they were awarded a spot-kick of their own shortly after.

But Allan McGregor got down to his right and got a strong hand behind Aleksandar Katai’s blasted penalty.

However the chaotic first half was far from over yet – the visitors had two of their own chopped off inside the opening 15 and continued to threaten the Rangers goal.

A third was always going to be huge for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men – and that’s exactly what they got when Leon Balogun headed home a Tavernier corner on 51 minutes.

The Nigerian defender got himself up highest and directed a perfectly executed header into the bottom right corner.

Rangers now hold a commanding lead going into next week’s second leg.

But they face a quick-fire turnaround first – with a trip to Dens Park to play Dundee in the Scottish Cup quarter final tomorrow.
