Raheem Sterling wants to leave Manchester City amid claims that Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal want to sign him, according to The Athletic.

What’s the story

The Daily Mail reported last month that City are open to selling Sterling, and that Arsenal want to sign the former Liverpool attacking midfielder.

The Athletic has claimed that the England international, who can also operate as a winger, wants to leave.

Raheem Sterling to Arsenal?

Sterling has improved a lot from the time he was at Liverpool.

Under City manager Pep Guardiola, the 26-year-old has taken his game to another level, especially in his finishing.

However, this past season, Sterling was far from his best, although former Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend believes that the attacker is still a “world-class” player, as quoted in The Daily Star.

The attacker scored 10 goals and gave seven assists in 28 Premier League starts.

The City no.7 also scored one goal and gave two assists in seven Champions League starts this past season.

Arsenal manager Arteta worked with Sterling when he was a coach at City, and perhaps the Gunners feel that that connection could help them sign him.

However, the Gunners will not play in the Europa League next season and are not going to challenge for the Premier League title.

Sterling is used to winning major trophies with City.

However, the Englishman might want to be the central figure at Arsenal in their quest to return to the glory days.
