PSV vs Sparta Rotterdam build-up & previous line-ups:
Things were looking rosy in the Eindhoven garden when PSV started this season with four straight wins. Across these outings Roger Schmidt’s men — the last Eredivisie side to boast a perfect record — registered 14 goals and conceded on just three occasions. Then came Feyenoord’s visit and they subsequently ran out 0-4 winners at the Philips Stadium, a result that saw PSV yield top spot to Ajax, but they’d recover with a narrow 1-2 win at Heracles but last time out De Boeren suffered another loss. The league’s surprise package Willem II inflicted a 2-1 loss on them and heading into matchday eight PSV are four points behind Erik ten Hag’s side and will be looking to prevent back-to-back league defeats which is something they’ve not experienced since October 2019 (3-0 at Utrecht and 0-4 v AZ). As for consecutive home Eredivisie losses, well you have to go back to early 2014, when Groninegn (2-3) and Feyenoord (0-2) humbled them.
It’s going to be a tall ask for Sparta, who have only returned to Rotterdam with six wins across 54 previous Eredivisie visits to PSV’s home, and the most recent of those successes came in December 1995 when the likes of Phillip Cocu, Ronaldo and Luc Nilis were lining up for the hosts. On that winter’s day Henk ten Cate’s men came from 1-0 down to run out 1-2 victors; a game that saw Dennis de Nooijer create the equaliser before netting the winner 23 minutes from time. Since then it’s been 13 losses from 14 games played, the sole exception was a 1-1 draw in February 2010, Rydell Poepon rescuing a point for the visitors in the 90th minute. Coming into this latest showdown Sparta find themselves sitting in 13th place after seven matches played. Henk Fraser’s men have only managed one win so far this season and that came on the fourth matchday when they beat Fortuna Sittard who currently prop up the young championship table.

Player to watch: Cody Gakpo (PSV Eindhoven)
It was no shock to see Cody Gakpo in Louis van Gaal’s preliminary squad for the Netherlands upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Latvia and Gibraltar. The much-talented young Dutch forward grabbed his opportunity in the last round of international 2022 WCQ fixtures when he netted a first Oranje goal against Montenegro. He’s since carried that momentum into PSV’s domestic affairs and comes into matchday eight having registered two goals and created four more. His productivity nestles him nicely in the hunt for this season’s ‘assist king’ crown. As things currently stand only Steven Berghuis (6) and the current wearer Dusan Tadic (5) have been more creative than him. When it comes to chances created per 90 no PSV player has outshone Gakpo (2.7) who’ll certainly fancy going up against a Sparta side low on confidence.
