PSV right-back Denzel Dumfries targeted by Everton

PSV Eindhoven right-back Denzel Dumfries has emerged as a primary target for Everton.

Denzel Dumfries, 25, was one of the Netherlands’ star performers in Euro 2020, notching two goals. The Dutch had a frustrating European Championship campaign as they got eliminated in the Round of 16 following a shock 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Czech Republic. However, the 25-year-old right-back did well in the games that he played.

The Dutch international is set to leave PSV Eindhoven this summer, with defending Serie A champions Inter Milan also keen on securing his services. Everton want to sign Dumfries as they enter the rebuilding phase having appointed Rafael Benitez as their new manager.

Rafael Benitez, 61, former Liverpool manager, has caused one major stir by accepting to join Everton. The Spanish tactician knows the magnitude of the job he has at Goodison Park and must deliver the goods right from the start to win the hearts of Everton fans.

Having finished an underwhelming 10th on the Premier League table despite starting the last campaign very well under former manager Carlo Ancelotti, Benitez will be expected to challenge for a top-six finish in the 2021/22 season. And for the Toffees to climb up the table next term, he’ll need to make some quality additions to his squad.

Rafael Benitez must reinforce his backline

Benitez is yet to make a single signing since his controversial switch to Goodison Park. The 61-year-old manager has a reputation of working well on a shoestring budget and getting the most out of the players of his squad.

The centre-back department is one which the Royal Blues need to strengthen having conceded 48 goals in the 2020/21 campaign. The likes of Yerry Mina, Michael Keane and Mason Holgate weren’t convincing at all and aren’t up to the quality to take Benitez’s side forward.

That simply leaves a lot of room for improvement in that position and Benitez would be wise to sign a central defender in this current transfer window. In addition, he must also bring in a new right-back, with Ancelotti using Ben Godfrey, Mason Holgate and even Alex Iwobi at right-back last season.

Seamus Coleman and Jonjoe Kenny are the natural right-backs in the current Everton squad, with the latter returning to Goodison Park earlier this summer after spending the last couple of campaigns out on loan at Celtic and Schalke respectively. Thus, it remains to be seen whether or not Kenny will be a part of Benitez’s squad for the upcoming season.

Not to forget, Coleman is 32 and his injury record doesn’t fill with much promise. Having said that, it is vital for the Merseysiders to sign a new right-back to cover and compete with Coleman from next term.

Denzel Dumfries could be a solid signing for the Toffees

Denzel Dumfries was excellent for PSV Eindhoven this past season and did very well for the Netherlands in Euro 2020. At 25, the Dutchman is ready for a big move. He has been playing in the Eredivisie since starting his career with Sparta Rotterdam in 2014 and since then has grown tremendously in stature and confidence.

The attacking right-back would be a valuable long-term asset to Everton’s backline if he is able to replicate the same form he has shown for club and country in the recent few years. Therefore, it would be excellent if Benitez manages to lure Dumfries to Goodison Park this summer.
