Player Ratings | Union Berlin 1-1 Bayern Munich

[ad_1]

This really was an entertaining game. Two quick goals from both sides early on resulted in back-to-back Bundesliga draws for Bayern Munich who drop down to third. Union Berlin were well deserved of their draw and even had their chances to win it.

Union Berlin

Fredrick Rønnow – 8: A great performance. Rønnow couldn’t do much for Bayern’s equaliser but boy did he make sure they didn’t score again. He was making saves all the way up to the 93rd minute when he tipped over a headed effort by Mané.

Paul Jaeckel – 7: Along with his defenders, Jaeckel did well to frustrate and keep Bayern at arm’s length. At times, Coman got the better of him but his fellow teammates were there to keep Bayern’s forwards out.

Robin Knoche – 7: A commanding effort by the centre-back. He had his hands full with the likes of Mané and Musiala but had a solid game nonetheless.

Danilho Doekhi – 7: Doekhi is settling in well since his summer move from Vitesse. He was a leader with his former employer and is clearly the same in a Union shirt. He and his defenders can give themselves a pat on the back this evening.

Julian Ryerson – 7: Ryerson liked up well with Union’s strikers and broke up the play when Bayern were gaining momentum. He was one of the key cogs in Union’s result today.

András Schäfer – 8: Likewise, Schäfer was a thorn in Bayern’s side this afternoon. He broke up play and carried a threat going forward. His performance reminiscent of his for Hungary against Germany at the Euros. A top talent and a real asset for Union.

Rani Khedira – 7: Working in unison with his fellow central midfielders, Khedira did everything he could to slow down Bayern attacks and keep them out. Nothing much else to say, a good performance.

Morten Thorsby – 7: Thorsby played well at both ends of the pitch, a couple of times he played some risky passes but luck was on his side today. Thorsby worked well with his fellow midfielders and clearly knows his role in the team.

Christopher Trimmel – 8: Despite his age, Trimmel did well to keep up with the likes of Davies and Sané. He played in the freekick for Union’s goal and played his part as the team’s skipper. Who said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?

Kevin Behrens – 7: Behrens got a solid hour under his belt and caused Bayern’s defence problems. He and Becker got the better of Upamecano on a few occasions. He hustled and bustled and put in a good shift.

Sheraldo Becker – 8: When he got his chance, Becker took it. His goal was a fabulous volley which left Neuer rooted to the spot. He worked well running onto through balls and kept Bayern on their toes.

Subs:

Jamie Leweling – 7: Leweling was electric and fantastic when he came on. He gave Union an extra boost in the final 15 and nearly helped well to snatch all three points.

Sven Michel – 6: Michel had a cameo up top and again caused the likes of Upamecano all sorts of problems. A good player to have come off the bench in a game like this.

Genki Haraguchi – 6: Despite only coming on at 85 minutes, the Japanese international put Union on a different level. Bayern struggled to get the ball off him at times and looked like he could have changed a draw into a win.

Niko Gießelmann (-), Paul Seguin (-)

Bayern Munich

Manuel Neuer – 7: Neuer didn’t have too much to do at times but did keep Union from snatching victory late on. He did what he had to do but couldn’t do anything about Union’s goal.

Alphonso Davies – 7: Davies put in a good shift this afternoon and tried to make things happen for his side. He was met by a determined Trimmel but did cause Union several problems but ultimately to no avail.

Matthijs de Ligt – 8: The Dutchman was the stand-out defender for Bayern today. When Union seemed to be through on goal, there he was to clear the danger. He also did well to cover for several Upamecano mistakes.

Dayot Upamecano – 4: He really was that poor today. His passing was off at times and was bullied off the ball so many times I lost count. I wouldn’t be making eye contact with Julian Nagelsmann anytime soon.

Benjamin Pavard – 6: Pavard was given license to go forward today and at times tried his luck but to no avail. A good performance but ultimately, no cigar.

Marcel Sabitzer – 7: A solid performance by Sabitzer who linked well with the likes of Musiala, Kimmich, and Sané. He caused problems all day but came across a stubborn Union side who didn’t let up.

Joshua Kimmich – 7: Kimmich was once again great to watch. He deserved his goal and was constantly causing issues for Union who only withstood the pressure thanks to some last-gasp tackles and excellent goalkeeping.

Leroy Sané – 6: It just wasn’t his day today. He had a glorious chance to put Bayern in front before halftime but was denied by Rønnow. Upon review, he really should have scored.

Jamal Musiala – 8: The talent this young lad has is scary. Right from the off he was flicking the ball around Union and set up several great chances. It just wasn’t his team’s day today.

Kingsley Coman – 8: Coman was one of the more threatening forwards today. He kept Union on the back foot for large parts but just couldn’t set up the winner.

Sadio Mané – 6: A rather quiet game for the striker. He was well-marked throughout and when he got his chances couldn’t beat an inspired Rønnow between the sticks.

Subs:

Ryan Gravenberch – 6: He looked comfortable when he came on but found similar problems his fellow teammates had been running into all game. In truth, there wasn’t much the Dutchman could do to turn the game.

Thomas Müller – 6: Coming off the bench is rare for Müller. He was involved as soon as he got onto the pitch but again, couldn’t quite find the moment of magic.

Serge Gnabry (6), Leon Goretzka (6)
