Rashford misses start to the season

Following heartbreak with England in the Euro 2020 final, Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford opted to have shoulder surgery. As a result, he has been a conspicuous absentee from Manchester United’s mixed start to the season.

Without the attacker, his side have managed 4 wins and 2 draws from the opening 7 games of the Premier League campaign, but have suffered losses at the hands of Young Boys in the Champions League and West Ham in the Carabao Cup 3rd round, which of course saw another potential avenue for silverware shut to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Rashford has since returned to full training, but was left out of the England squad for the upcoming internationals having not yet featured in competitive action. However, he is now back among the Manchester United first team, and is in line to make a return to action this weekend against Leicester City, having netted in a behind-closed-doors friendly win over Blackbrun Rovers.

Ole tells Rashford to prioritise football

Speaking ahead of the trip to the King Power stadium, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has warned Rashford about the dangers of spreading himself too thin.

Rashford has been a vocal participant in politics, campaigning vigorously for the retention of free school meals during the pandemic, and has earned an OBE for his troubles. Further still, he was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Manchester thanks to his charity work, and continues to dedicate himself to helping others.

Asked about the England forward, however, Solskjaer was quick to return things to the pitch, saying:

“He is coming into the best age for a footballer and he’s got a challenge on his hands here at Manchester United – and has a challenge on his hands to play for England”

“Marcus has done some remarkable and fantastic things, but now he maybe needs to prioritise his football”

With the addition of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, competition for places is fiercer than ever. Will Rashford be able to give up his charity work and focus entirely on his football, though?
