Newcastle United have announced that Federico Fernandez, Jacob Murphy and Dwight Gayle have all signed new contracts ahead of the new season, whilst Paul Dummett and Fabian Schar have extended existing contracts.

Fernandez’s new contract comes after a positive 2020-21 season in which he made the most blocks out of all Newcastle players with 31 blocks in 24 appearances.

Murphy meanwhile has scored four goals in 68 appearances since moving to St James’ Park in Summer 2017, despite enduring two loan spells at West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday before establishing himself in the Magpies first team last season.

Gayle meanwhile has extended his stay on Tyneside following five seasons playing for the Toon Army in which he netted 34 goals in 113 appearances, despite spending 2018-19 season out on loan at West Brom where he produced 24 goals in 41 appearances.

Newcastle manager, Steve Bruce has revealed that he is delighted to see Fernandez, Murphy and Gayle all sign new contracts, whilst Dummett and Schar have agreed one-year extensions to existing contracts until June 2022.

Bruce also praised all five players for demonstrating “a thorough understanding” of Newcastle and what is required to play for the team, all whilst providing “excellent contributions over recent years.”

Dummett, Fernandez, Gayle and Murphy have all returned to the club’s training base at Darsley Park to begin pre-season training ahead of the new season, whilst Schar isn’t set to return until late July after featuring in Switzerland’s run to the Quarter-Finals of Euro 2020 where they lost to Spain on penalties.

Looking ahead to pre-season with fixtures confirmed against York, Harrogate, Doncaster Rovers, Rotherham, Burton Albion and Norwich across the next month, Bruce iterated that the required “hard work” is already underway and can’t wait to start “building momentum” ahead of the new season.
