It was Arsenal Technical Director Edu’s scouting team that was key in signing Nuno Tavares this summer, according to The Athletic.
What’s the story?
Arsenal signed Tavares from Benfica in the summer transfer window.
Sky Sports reported at the time of the signing that the Gunners paid £8 million in transfer fee for the 21-year-old left-back.
The Athletic have now reported that the signing of the Portuguese youngster was ‘heavily influenced by Edu’s scouting department’.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta ‘even went so far as to thank the recruitment team’, according to the report.
Would Nuno Tavares make Arsenal better?
Kieran Tierney is the clear first-choice left-back at Arsenal.
The former Celtic star is one of the best left-backs in the Premier League.
When fit and available, the 24-year-old is one of the first names on the Arsenal teamsheet.
However, Arsenal needed to sign a suitable back-up to Tierney, and in Tavares they have found one.
The Portuguese is only 21, which means that he could be patient and continue to learn without demanding to play all the time.
Tierney has had injury problems during his time at Arsenal so far.
Tavares could simply slot in place of Tierney when the Scotland international suffers an injury.
The left-back made seven starts and seven substitute appearances in the Portuguese league, and made three starts and two substitute appearances in the Europa League for Benfica last season.
The 21-year-old has played 33 minutes in the Premier League for Arsenal so far this campaign.
