Paul Merson has told SportsKeeda that Aston Villa duo Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa are good enough to start for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

The former Villa star made the comments about the two defenders while praising manager Dean Smith.

The Sky Sports pundit believes that Smith has improved central defenders Mings and Konsa so much that they are now good enough to start for Liverpool.

Merson told SportsKeeda: “You always want managers to improve the players they work with, and Dean Smith has worked wonders with his group at Aston Villa.

“Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, John McGinn, and Jack Grealish have flourished under Smith’s tutelage and if he sells them now, Aston Villa could make a lot of money in the transfer market.

“Dean Smith started off with very little at Aston Villa, but he brought players into the club and improved them.

“Both Mings and Konsa could start for the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool but have chosen to place their faith in Dean Smith’s Aston Villa project.

“That is one of the best indicators of Dean Smith’s brilliance as a Premier League manager.”

Does Paul Merson have a point?

Mings is a very good defender who has improved a lot under Smith.

The 28-year-old is in his prime now and was part of the England squad that reached the Euro 2020 final.

Konsa is only 23 and is still developing, but the former Brentford man is one of the better young centre-backs in the Premier League.

The defender was actually linked with Liverpool earlier this summer and was praised by Reds legend Jamie Carragher last season.

Could Mings and/or Konsa start for Liverpool now?

Virgil van Dijk is one of the best centre-backs on the planet, and it is really hard to see Mings or Konsa replace him in Liverpool manager Klopp’s side.

Liverpool also have Joel Matip and Joe Gomez in their squad, and the former Premier League champions signed Ibrahima Konate this summer.
